I recently reread Empire of the Summer Moon (Gwynne) and one of my favorites, Goodbye to a River (Graves), and I wanted to do a little more research on local Comanche raids in my area of Texas.

I came upon this map on the University of Texas Arlington library website that pinpoints documented raids and conflicts throughout Texas and parts of southern Oklahoma. I thought it was pretty interesting to see how many of these skirmishes took place near places I have lived, hunted, and fished. Shows you how dangerous and volatile our state was back then.

When you pull it up, if you go to the upper righthand corner of the map, there's a button that lets you change the layout from 1833 to modern with present day towns, county lines, reservoirs, etc. Each entry has a date, brief description, and citation from the published literature.

https://library.uta.edu/borderland/

From what I read in the books above, people still talked about the Comanche attacks even into the late 20th century in some parts of Texas, having maybe lost a grandparent or great grandparent, or had known someone who did.

Hope y'all find this as interesting as I did.

Thank you for sharing. I hunt out West towards Throckmorton/Albany (Paint Creek). Lots of history out that way.

When looking for history, look for the ghost towns of each county. Here is a good one to start with, Maverick, Runnels county, Texas. Make sure you read about the cemetery.

My great grand father Henry Miller was killed and scalped while making cypress shingles near the Guadalupe River. The incident was indicated on this map. Thanks for sharing.

@#$%$ Spell Check does not do well with German names. It was Henry Meier. My cousin and I were talking about the incident the other day.

Great find on the map. Never realized how many battle sites there are in TX. Every May there is a picnic at Doan's Crossing North of Vernon TX. that is pretty interesting piece of history. Its was an old trading post from the 1800s on the Cattle Drive Trails to Kansas market.
Look at Graves "Hard Scrabble" also. Thanks for the map link. Vernon has a real nice Museum right on VRJC campus.

If you look at the source for entries that interest you, you can usually do a search for the entire books and download them for free. Some can be real interesting reads especially when it is related to the same area you live or hunt.
For example:
Border Wars of Texas published 1912 in Tioga TX

I own land South of Bowie. A private road goes to my gate. I’m landlocked but the one lane road was designated as a County Road.

I hired an old man to witch for a well site. He was a member of the Montague County Historical Group. He told me that where I have my trailer house was once the stage station where they kept and changed out horses. I showed him a shallow, obviously dug out place, with big rocks around 3 sides. He said that was a breast works to defend against raids. I dug around it just a little bit and found some broken coffee cups and some square nails. I decided to stop in case it was used as a grave.

I have an old rock sided water well back in the property. Across the fence is the remains of a rock house foundation. No idea who lived there. Or when.

Then there is a place where I found some busted pottery and barrel hoops. About 1/2 mile back from the house. I got the old historian back. He told me that I found “whiskey hill”. At one time, during prohibition days, it was the site of local “shine” makers. It was referenced in a book about the history of the area.

I had a hunting lease just North of Bowie Dave and some of the guys found some arrow heads around the creek. Great land out there.
