I'm in East Texas so Freeze is not that big of a deal. Depending on Weather and my job that seems to get in the way, late Feb more than likley I think will plant Cowpeas and Clover. If nothing else to expermint and practice LOL. Besides, gives me an excuse to have quality time with my tractor, which is the same as getting out of the house and away from my loving wife for a few days.
I wanted to get Red Ripper peas, they seemed to do better in the sandy soil than the other peas but can't find any Red Ripper seeds. So I'll plant Iron and Clay cowpeas I guess.
I only plant 2-3 acres but its fun and I like to do it.
What you are guys going to plant in the spring.
Thanks, Billy

I will be planting 13 acres of this. Looks like on their website they sell Red Ripper seeds also.

30 Dollars per acre is cheap, I need to look into that.
Thanks, Billy

The Turner fall mix did good, I will try the Spring as well. I also did Mung beans last year and they came up great.

From my experience, you need to go at least 1.5 times heavier on seed than they recommend. I usually go double on mine. If they call for 20lb/acre, i do 40.

Kinda what I thought on pounds per acre. I called them, Turner Seed and asked why does their mix take less per acre. They told me since I get more rain in East Texas I would need to double up. Not sure I understand the logic but thats what they told me.
Thanks, Billy

You will be disappointed with the amount of plants growing per acre if you plant the recommended rate. That rate is based on planting with a drill or other type planter where you get accurate seed coverage and seeing rate. Broadcasting seed out and covering with a drag is going to take more seed also due to various seed depths at coverage...causing less stand than if planted with a drill. Seeding rates in areas of less rainfall is going to be less than in areas with more rainfall due to...well more rainfall. Think about it this way....if you are putting 20,000 seeds(plants if they all come up) per acre vs. 40,000 seeds per acre which one will take more moisture to produce a crop? Which one will take more grazing pressure? 2-3 acres will support 6-20 deer on a well done food plot with good rainfall. Weed/grass competition, less rain, lot more deer, etc all factor into success or failure of the plot.
Are idiots multiplying faster than normal people?

Local wildlife tends to gobble up my spring food plots fairly quickly at the recommended seed drilling rates. This year, I'm testing out an electric fence for spring planting combined with using 50% more seed than suggested in areas that aren't protected by an electric fence. Haven't had any issues with oats/sorghum at the recommended rates, but legumes and peredovik sunflowers seem to get devoured before they have a chance to grow. Going to try seeding more this year to see if the extra plants help with the high grazing pressure.

I need to get a seed spreader. My broadcasting by hand takes to long and I get spots with no seeds and other spots with too many. I think I will get a 50 and rig up a bracket that will fit on the back of tractor, bolt to the drawbar etc. I think I get the right amount per acres................just not all in the right place LOL.
Thanks, Billy

They make seed spreaders that hook up to your 3 point. No need to rig anything up.

If my plots were bigger, I’d get a spreader for my three point. My stuff is two, three acres, maybe a little more.
Thanks, Billy

My stuff is two, three acres, maybe a little more. sounds about like ours and we have had pretty good success using a receiver hitch mount road feeder on the back of my RTV or son's Defender. I also have several smaller plots that are about 30 feet by 120-150 feet long where I just use a 5 gallon bucket and broadcast by hand while walking the length of the plot allowing the wind to distribute pretty evenly.

The problem with the three point spreaders, that I have found, is that if your planting strips like I do you will end up throwing lots of seed into the brush on each side. A three point spreader throws a wide swath- one pass down the middle may not reach each side of your plot but two off center passes may throw half your seed into the brush.

I would have the same problem with a 3 point. I have some long skinny plots and to many seeds in the brush with a 3 point as far as they will throw.
I used to have a feeder for the back of my 4wheeler but no telling what happened to it. I havent seen it in years. I need to get another rigged up for my 4 wheeler, hunting buggie, tractor whatever to throw seeds and corn with. A lot of things I need to do!!!
Thanks, Billy
