A couple of months ago I started looking for new 30 30 brass. The only kind I found on the web was Starline. Never used it but decided to order a 100 round bag. It's been sitting around in my work shop for about 60 days. Yesterday I opened the 100 round bag and started prepping. I found a dozen with tarnish already started and 2 with a crushed shoulder.

Well, now I guess I know something about Starline.

I have never had issues with their brass but know of a few people that suffered split cases or even detachment around the circumference of the base.

Pass the gravy.

I have never had a problem with Starline though have read some reports of different issues but not very often. I have seen plenty of tarnished Winchester and Remington brass in the bags on racks in stores.

Not saying it doesn't happen, I have bought Lapua brass that was dented in the sealed package, doesn't stop me from buying Lapua brass, how things are handled after it leaves the manufacture is not under their control.

Hate to hear that. I use their pistol brass exclusively and have never had an issue loading mild to wild. Hopefully they will get their act together.

I don't think any brass maker is immune from defects in their brass. Yesterday dealing with $1.25 a piece Lapua 7mm-08, about 20% had dented case mouths. Oh well, the bullet will still seat.

That sucks dude. I got a pag of 50 308 brass. Haven't loaded them yet but I did prep them all, including priming the cases. I really didn't see any that needed to be culled.

They have always made good brass. I've loaded lots and lots of them over the years with no issues. They were probably perfect when they left the factory.

All the Starline brass I have used over the years has been good. My last order was for 1000 pieces of 10MM ( pre pandemic) and it all appears to be in great condition. I loaded up 100 with no issues. I recently opened a factory sealed bulk box of .40 cal JHP bullets that I had laying around and they appeared a bit tarnished. But a couple minutes in the wet tumbler and they looked great.

Used to buy Starline exclusively back when I was loading 9mm and .38 SPL. Don’t recall ever having an issue. Hopefully, your experience is an anomaly.

So far, 12 out of 100 unsuitable to load. I did let them roll around in corn cob media for a couple of hours. The tarnish isn’t just surface so I tossed them. Also tossed the two that are actually damaged (bent).

I’ll tumble the rest and examine them. Been hand loading for over 40 years and never had this happen.

It doesnt matter what brand of brass you buy, if it comes in a bag I expect some of it to be dented.

I have never used starline, but have always read good reviews on it.

^ ^ ^ this
Any brand of bulk brass I've bought that was shipped
in a bag had a mashed one or two. Usually they just
needed minor finegleing to put right.
As long as we have this pandemic topped off with
firearms and ammo panic, it'll be a pure miracle
if anyone gets their deliveries in decent shape if
they arrive at all.

JMHO- I've used a bunch of starline and have
a bunch loaded now and it's been ok for me.
Sorry to hear of your bad experience

I use Starline brass almost exclusively for the following cartridges and have yet to have to cull a single piece of new brass.

45/70
.270 Win
.30-06
.30 Carbine
6.5 CM
.357mag
.38spl
.44mag
.44spl
.45acp
.45 auto rim
.41mag
10mm auto
9mm
30/30

I sure wish that they would start making 7mm mag and 300 win mag brass.

Trolling? Heck no, I meant every word of it.

Could you post a pic of what is unsutable to load? Perhaps one mans trash is another's treasure. Even in my cheap bagged winchester/remington/ etc. brass i have never had a piece that wasnt loadable. Also my 7mm08 lapua brass that came in a box contained plenty of dented/out of round necks.

All new brass needs to be at the minimum run the expander into the necks to straighten them and remove any mouth dents. Even Lapua and Norma in the boxes with foam get the mouths dinged. At least mine does.

Starline has been making pistol brass flawlessly. But some of the rifle brass isn't their finest. I've been using the 6.5 grendel necked down to 6mm and I get lots of cracks in the shoulders. At the original shoulder, not the necked down portion. And a lot of the cases are thinner on one side. Like the draw was crooked or something. IDK but it's so much cheaper than the Lapua 6.5 grendel brass I'll keep buying it and hope the quality improves.

One shot is all it should take.

I’ve used it in mainly pistol caliber stuff, and 45/70 recently I got some creedmoor brass and it was very consistent and nice to work with. I’d buy any flavor they make and not be afraid of using it in anything really.

Red Chevy, no idea how to post pics And not much real interest in learning how.

Two had mashed necks. The others had a lot of tarnish that tumbling didn’t help. I tossed 12 rounds out of 100 in the bag.

Never received “bad” brass before.

I have had one piece of bad in Lapua a couple that internally held less powder from Peterson BUT Winchester you just need to plan on 5% being trashed in every bag.
I have used about 900 pieces of StarLine in 9mm and 6.5 Creedmoor and no lost pieces but I guess it happens.

Back in the day when I was shooting BPCR Starline was the standard. I bought 500 cases of 45-90 and not a cull in the lot. Weights were good too, meaning pretty close to the same weight. 45-90 BPCR is lower pressure; so I never had any splits or problems.

Im surprised to hear about problems, but I haven't bought from them in 10+ years either.

I don’t think I’d complain much about any brass I was able to find in the last 6 months

I've loaded a whole lot of Starline and never had problems
