Will we stories soon that gun ranges are going out of business? I’m just guessing here, but would assume their foot traffic has taken a hit due to ammo shortage and hoarding. Maybe I shouldn’t assume.

The indoor range by me stays busy. Went in last week to look at suppressors and they had a wait on the range.

I was Elm Fork in Dallas today and they told me the ammo shortage has really hurt their business.

Here locally two more indoor ranges are opening soon. One is supposed to be pretty upscale.
Also noticed a new one being built when I was in San Antonio last week.
I guess when 39 million new guns were sold last year there are some that feel there will be demand and ammo will catch up eventually.

Where I would see it affecting the ranges I’ve been to is on the rental side. All of the ranges I go to require you to buy ammo from them if you rent a gun. Some of the most expensive, cheap ammo, I’ve ever had to purchase.

Thanks,
Rich

I would think you will see more people making ammo in the future. They are loosing out on money with the shelves being bare. I heard today that Hornady bought a new plant to be able to make more.

I went to Wileys a couple of weeks ago to pick up .257 dies and their range was packed with people waiting. More than I’ve ever saw out there and I’ve been going there periodically since 81. In my opinion there’s lots of people waking up and preparing for the path our country is possibly taking. There’s your political twist for this thread. I think it’s very real and alive here.

I’m seeing the opposite effect at the ranges here in South Central Texas. The Ranges have direct lines to distributors and are selling ammo sans any competition right now. The last time I went to a range they limited sales of 2 boxes of ammo a day per customer and we’re charging a premium on both ammo and range time. There was a wait and high turn over as a result. I’d say ranges are taking full advantage of the current situation.

Nobody is losing out on money with the shelves bare. They are selling it literally as fast as they can make it. Ammo is still being sold, It's just not sitting on shelves for months before being sold.

I think you are 100% correct. Lots of people waking up.

Bunch of new shooters. That's one of the main reasons of gun/ammo shortage. They saw the mob come to their front door and even liberals/anti gun people started buying guns and ammo.

Sure they are. If they could make more, then they would sell more. Way too much demand in the market right now and they are loosing out on revenue by not being able to keep up with it.

Losing out on money & losing money are quite different. They are unequivocally losing out on money. If they had $5,000,000 more worth of ammo on shelves right now, it'd sell right now therefore, they're losing out on money. $5,000,000 in this case.

They bought the Remington plant when they claimed bankruptcy. They said it'll still take a bit longer to revamp everything to their standards & get people trained.

Gun ranges near me have been very empty recently. I think they'll struggle with ammo prices so high. Who is going to shoot 100 rounds of 9mm when it costs $50+? And if you're only going to shoot 20 rounds, is it worth paying a $15-$20 range fee?

Will likely be a good while before I go.

Lubbock has a fairly new indoor range and they are packed every time I drive by.

Looks like the indoor ranges are doing good & the outdoor ranges are suffering. I've never used an indoor range & can see it being appealing to the 7M new inexperienced gun owners.

Not sure what ranges everyone visits but I’ve been to four different ones here in SA and they’ve all been busy. Outdoor and indoor. Long lines to go shoot, I would say now is the right time to open one. Hoarders make up a small percentage and the rest are actual shooters. I would say the competitions are hurting due to the market.

Elm Fork's range officers on the rifle and pistol side are what hurt their business, along with some of their rules...

I am in SA too, and I am seeing the same. There is always a wait and many shooters are perfectly content with 100RDS slow fire with a range fee. Part of the equation is that many new shooters have no previous reference on cost et al. $100 on 2 boxes of 9mm and a $20 range fee is THEIR norm. Factory in that ranges can max out the price on ammo with little to no competition and have a revolving door on range fees every half hour and it is a sustainable business model.

What is a gun range? There are none around here that I know of besides pasture.

Pass the gravy.

I've stopped going as often to Carter's Country here in Houston since they've started piling up shooters on top of one another. I've spoken with other guys who have done the same. The 100-yard range has 30 benches and they keep half of them closed at all times. I suspect it's because they don't want to hire enough range officers to cover all of them.

Its the outdoor ranges that will have a hard time keeping up. Its very hard for rifle shooters/hunters to go to a range with ammo/reloading supplies in short supply. As in the common stuff like 30/06 and 270 win do not exist on shelves and online for the most part.
