Thinking about getting a turntable, speakers and an amplifier. Buy some "direct to disc" records

anyone do this?

suggest some better components...

I have a setup like that, with gear from the Houston house. Bang&Olufsun turntable, Phase Linear 400 power amp, and a Carver preamp. I still have an unused Phase Linear 200 Power amp that I would sell, I guess, but you’d need a true preamp, and those are hard to find these days, unless you want to pay the big bucks.

That said, if you plan to play records and transfer the songs to CD, that idea occurred to me a few years ago, but I couldn’t find a serious piece of gear to do that. The turntables were low quality. So I got some intermediate (preamp to the gear to the computer) gear. That worked, but it was rather slow going, since I didn’t want every song on every record.

All of what I said above is a bit dated, so maybe better gear (turntable to CD) is available now.

The house we’re in now is too small to hold the big audiophile setup I had in the Houston house. It was quite a setup. I do miss it. The Phase Linear 200 was for the rear speakers, while the 400 drove the big front speakers (pro level JBL).

On the pre-amp they’re not all created equal either. I went through a few before I had the sound I wanted from my turntable. It’s been a few years since I converted so I don’t remember what I wound up with. I do know I wound up with a tube type pre-amp.

My daughter made off with all my good albums from the 60's. Left me with my old 8 tracks. Anybody want to talk about the virtues of 8 tracks????

(Can anyone say anything good about 8 tracks?)

My 12 year-old love his records. One of his favorites is his Jim Croce album. I'm a great dad! roflmao

We still have a stereo record player, also an 8 track player with a recorder.

Yep. I’ve started acquiring vinyl from some of my favorites, but it’s usually a band’s greatest hits album.

Wp75160’s tube type preamp comment has me wishing for my old set-up again. Among my extra gear is an EQ1 equalizer. It, and the Power Amp just sit and stare at me now. Not hooked up to anything. The equalizer had microphones for putting at the spot you sit and allowing you to set the frequency response where you want it at that specific spot. And the Carver Preamp had a holographic setting. Somehow or other it would allow you to hear the music and be able to hear where each musician was playing - drums to my right, flute to my left, and like that. Most amazing. And the sound clarity and detail was also amazing. I always said that if the guitar player scratched his butt, I could hear it. Hooked into all that was a high end cassette player/recorder and a huge TEAC reel to reel.

Well, I don’t have sound quality like that anymore, unfortunately. I do have an outstanding surround sound set-up in the family room. It’s great for movie watching, but it isn’t audiophile quality like my old set-up. The music comes from iTunes, so it isn’t what you could get off a record. But, you can play music all day and never have to walk to the phonograph.

I suppose you could say that I’ve given up sound quality for ease of use. And...I’m Ok with it, though I miss the great sound quality sometimes.
