This current ammo shortage made me think a bit and I decided to consolidate calibers going forward. I chose : .308 .22 .357 12 gauge
Sold everything that wasn’t in this list . Picked up a sweet 870 special field 12 gauge. Still want to add a Henry in .357 when they stock up again and probably an over under 12 gauge

That’s pretty much what I did years ago.
223 308 9mm 22LR
I do have 300 blackout and 6.5CM which I load for, but if [censored] hit the fan I really wouldn’t miss them.
The calibers I consolidated to are all the most popular and easiest to find. If [censored] does go crazy they’ll be the easiest calibers to find when scavenging.

Have the exact same plus a antique .45 Colt New Service and a 1903a3, 30-06. I load my own for everything except the 12 ga. and .22 , so ammo isn't a big deal.

There are pluses and minuses.
Notice that the two lists so far posted both have similar cartridges on them. So if you limit yourself to certain cartridges, you also limit yourself to availability.
When you can find 470 Nitro Express right now but can't find 9mm, that is something to think about.

I consolidated around the 7's... 7X57, 7mm-08 and .280. Except for the case, the other components can be interchangeable. So in a pinch, I can swap.....

I have more than enough to get through political scares like we’re going through now. I consolidated in case something really bad went down and I had to scavenge. I doubt there are a lot of houses out there that have 470 nitro lying around. 9mm, 223, and 308 should be plentiful if you actually have to scavenge. I’m not worried about gouging or ammo runs, I planned for that and have more than enough to get through. If the world goes to [censored], I probably won’t have enough and will need to find more.

I do reload so I’ve tried to consolidate to 22lr 223 243 6.5CM 7mm/08 9mm 12ga. Seems like a lot but have plenty of components for each.

But I also have 260 for longer range, 40 SW as a backup to 9mm and 357 mag for more versatility (shooting low power 38 to full 357 reloads at +700 ft/lbs.

I consolidated pistols a few years ago to 9mm. I did keep two wheel guns in 357.

I'm actually doing more gun vs caliber consolidation these days. Given the ammo/component scarcity, I'm only keeping my most accurate guns. For example I have a Savage in 223 that shoots 0.75" at 100Y. I'll put a custom barrel on that one. I have an almost new 700 VLS that shoots 0.5-0.75" at 100Y (from factory it's not free floated) that I'll probably sell. It's plenty accurate for 99% of the folks here, but not for me. I'm also planning to sell a couple of 22lr that are very accurate, but it's just that I have too many 22lrs. At the end I'll probably keep only the Vudoo, Anschutz 1710 and one CZ 452.

I never understood why anyone would want a pistol caliber below say a 9mm. Even a 380 ballistics leave lots to be desired. The .25, 32 autos I’ve seen stick in smallish tree limbs and not penetrate anything so in my personal life I feel that a 9mm is the bottom run of defense pistols.
One could never have to many 22’s of any flavor Everyone needs at minimum:
Defensive capable pistol A shotgun A rifle capable of taking deer sized game.
These are the absolute bare minimum anyone should keep in my opinion which most folks agree with, however we had this discussion today about how much ammo one should have for each and I was nearly ridiculed for saying 10 boxes of each caliber/ gauge is what one should have as a minimum for each gun. I was surprised to hear from one guy who shoots shotgun with some pretty regularity say ahh nonsense I only keep 3 boxes of shells.. I was thinking he meant cases.. no not at all he absolutely meant boxes of 25 shells.
For me I enjoy firearms, it’s my hobby, I like to shoot, and I enjoy hand loading and tuning a rifle to shoot well. The only consolation that I’ve done is managed to get it all in one room in my house! Passed that I hope everyone has their 10 box minimum! To each his own!

But the trigger is 4lbs and it's not free floated. If I keep it I'll probably have to heavily modify it by changing the trigger and sanding the stock to free float it.

I have whittled mine down to:
6.5x280 Ackley 270 WSM 358 Winchester 358 Socom 375 Socom 458 Socom 7mm-08 22lr 380 9mm 40 S&W 45 ACP 12ga 28ga
Plenty of powder, primers and brass/hulls for the majority, running low on LRP, and I can still walk in the LGS most days and find 3 bricks of 22lr.
I don't know what the future holds for us, but we'll survive like in years past, people will return to the doldrums and quantities will slowly return. The one thing this did for me was push me to decide to reload for all calibers, not just a few that required me to. I also ordered a new Dillon 1100, I called about the 1050 and they talked me into a 1100. I don't know when it will ship, they sounded like they couldn't keep up with demand for the majority of their products.

My approach from Day 1 was to get the most bang (pun intended) for my buck by building a collection that would allow using the same ammo with multiple rifles. These include the .270, 30-30, and .243. I've never really given it much thought until now, but all of these were developed by Winchester.
I also one a 25-06 and 6.5 Creedmoor that were purchased more for novelty reasons, even thought they are both excellent performers.

I did this years ago based on numerous factors.
.22LR 9mm .45ACP 5.56x45mm 7.62x39mm .308WIN
I have been purchasing a case of something in these caliber every month for about a decade. Needles to say I do not regret it in these times.
