I have dug out a big prickly pear on my canyon. Poured diesel on the stump and the ground. How do I kill the pads? The pads is laying on the ground. It will be hard for me to remove as my house is on top and the prickly pear is on the bottom of the canyon. Can I just pour diesel on the mounds of pads. I cannot burn it because of dry bush. Thanks.

Last time I just skimmed the ground to tear em out and piled them up to compost. Danged if they didn’t rot right down to nothing.

Pick the right conditions and burn. It will help lots of things....

Much better to have a managed prescribed burn than a wildfire roll through the canyon...

They can. Some do. Most rot

I'd burn it and put sod over the roots depending on the size.

I can't burn it I might end up in jail. We have homes that are close by. I would if I could.

Pile them up, rotate them occasionally. I have gotten rid of probably 5 dump truck loads that way. I cut them just below the surface with the tractor bucket and make big piles.They eventually rot away. If you can't pile them, leave them laying spread out. They are not as good at re-sprouting roots as some people think.

I removed a bunch as stated above with the tractor bucket. But, since part of my East side boundary does not have a fence do to it sloping sharply East for about 6-8,' I piled the pads, along with dirt, sort of as a fence line, because the pads and the tosajillo are actually starting to put out roots.

During a drought I watched a guy burning pear thorns and cows rushing in to eat the things before it quit burning.

Other than that....hit em with the bucket and mash/wipe them off at ground level.

Grubbing hoe, pile and burn.

I'm going to declare war on mine soon Planning on piling them up and putting a black tarp over them when it's warm.

Before removal, that is. Let the cactus work for you, and carry the herbicide down to the roots and kill them too.

Use IPT method, and an herbicide such as Remedy with plenty of surfactant.

Then once it's good and dead, pile em up and burn 'em.

Last time I seen it get this cold was around 83 and the hard freeze took the cactus down to the ground. They can take a freeze but extended and this cold will probably do it again in this area.
