I'm too lazy to spend time looking it up - What's the phrase, preferably in German, for the tradition of putting a "last little bit" (I think is the English meaning") in a big-game animal's mouth after the kill, for the trip back to the lodge? (A spruce limb, wheat stalk, etc.) I don't own a "lodge", by the way.

I've never hunted on "the continent". The Scots and English seem to be pretty "meh" about the kill. 'Cept for the "wee dram" afterwards. roflmao I know there are tons of traditions for respecting the animals that are taken, including hunting horn calls that are specific for each animal, sounded at the end of the day, for each animal taken.

In trying to fill all my MLD tags, I noticed that I'm beginning to get slightly callous on taking a creature's life that was created by God. I try to always thank Him when I approach it, but some things the eastern Europeans do on a hunt are worth remembering. Hell, the Russians might even do it, (They're not all athiests.) (I've just never been in the laughing maniacally, fist-bump, high-five crowd.) cool

I commend your self analysis/introspection ability. It is a trait that few possess (or at least few exercise).

Just don’t high five and anything else you do I’m good with.
My Moms 103 an 100% German so I’ll ask her in the morning. The man with the two bucks(circa 57) outa Doss Tx was her Dad an 100%+ German so he probably knew. She will likely see him soon and maybe she will ask him.

I guided a young first time Texas hunter about 27 or 28 yrs ago who was accompanied by his Texas uncle who was married and living in Germany. He was the first to show how and then explained why the tradition was done to his nephew. He did it for his young nephew but I appreciated it also. It stuck with me all those years since then being I am half German it took on a special meaning. He also explained how expensive it was to hunt in Germany and what all they as hunters had to do once they leased a farm to hunt.

God's Peace to your mom. Doss is a special place...even I could see that, the few times I've been through it. Waidmannsheil!

I also have witnessed the tradition. Quite a few years ago I had a couple of Gentleman from Germany hunt with me. They saw a White Fallow Buck I had on the place. They said it would be a sin or bad luck to shoot a white animal. They did take a Blackbuck. After the kill they put a piece of green cedar in its mouth and said a few words. I also remember that they needed some 30 06 shells. I said no problem and took them to the hardware store in Bandera and bought a box. They were amazed how easy it was here compared to buying them in Germany.

IIRC they also put a branch at the sight the animal was standing when shot. Then one in the mouth of the animal(last bite) that was pointing a certain direction and one in the cap of the successful hunter...left side IIRC? I could not tell what was said and when it was said...but I do remember him saying a few words after placing each branch. The gentleman used small ends of cedar branches also.

Yes I remember them attaching a small piece of cedar leaf to the hunters cap. It seemed like they also had put a drop of blood on the leaf. I remember they had some very good looking rifles they had brought. But the bringing of the rifles was easier than the bringing of ammo from Germany.

That is a great picture freerange!

Creekrunner, I'm not sure what the phrase is that you are asking about but my beautiful mother, may she RIP, was 100% german. Her and her 7 siblings learned german before they did English so I as a kid growing up at my grandma's farm we heard plenty of german and a lot of it was some comical stuff. My grandma had one that she'd tell us grandkids every time we asked for something and it went like this below.

forgive my german misspellings please
wunsch dir etwas in einer hand und scheise in der anderen, dann hast du etwas in beiden
loosely translated:
wish for something in one hand and sh t in the other and then you got something in both. lmao

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

I had to laugh when I read the above post. I grew up with all of those old German sayings. In fact, English was a foreign language in my community. I had to learn English when I started in the first grade.

The one my Opa (German grandfather) used quite frequently was this one.

Das tut ungefähr so viel Gutes wie ein Fart im Wirbelwind.

That does about as much good as a fart in a whirlwind.

And many others.... Thanks for sharing.

Didn't the Comanches or Sioux have a similar tradition? I try hard to be mindful that God gave us dominion over animals and say a prayer of thanks before I clean anything I kill.

Was that a Savage 99 takedown your grandfather was holding?

Ive always hunted a lot but Ive never been a real gun nut. The short answer is I dont know. Grandpaw died when I was about close to 11. I remember being about 11 and was about to start deer hunting and thats about the time I remember talk of Granddads gun. I think there may of been some debate of rather I would use it. Im pretty sure I didnt hunt with it but I may of fired it. All I can remember was that he had what was called a "300 Savage". I assume that would be it but I dont know. Im spending a lot of time with my Mom and lots of memories are getting rekindled so maybe I will try to chase it down. There were several hunters in the family so I would be shocked if it left the family(at least early on.) Ive got a good guess who ended up with it and he died recently so I may do some checking around.

My grandfather had one in 30-30 and I recently inherited it. I remember many a cold morning sitting in a deer blind with him admiring that gun. When I'm saying deer blind, it was a circular blind made of logs and brush and you sat on the dirt or an old burlap feed sack if the ground was wet. Box blinds and tower blinds weren't invented yet. At the age I was with him, all I got to hunt with was a single shot .22. A .22 was legal back then. I still have that 22 also. It shoots as good today as it did back then. The ground looks like the picture was taken in the early 50's during the bad drouth. Not a blade of grass anywhere.

'Looks like the bigger buck has a game bag over him. Man, those things were a PITA. grin

I have an old Savage 99, brass counter, in .300 Savage. Neat old rifle.

About 11 years ago, the wife & I went to Namibia on a plains game hunt. The outfitter did the ceremony on every animal we killed plus a very short toast at the evening meal.

Danke für die Geschichten (thanks for the stories). My Dad's from Germany, but I never even shot a gun until 2002 when I just turned 26 years old. On a trip back to Germany 11 years ago, he and I visited with his old friends and relatives who were hunters and they told us stories of their Bavarian hunts.

Curious how many of you old farts speak German? My head is as square as they come I believe. My parents speak a little, I know a few phrases, my great uncle speaks it pretty well and my grandparents could speak it.

It dropped out of my family 3 generations ago. One of my great-grandmothers was "nee" Obenhaus out of Columbus, TX (daughter of Prussian immigrants). I heard it a lot as a kid, when we bought the place at Grapetown in 1968.

mine is only guttural - learned in bars. The ones I know who can still converse are in late 60's and up. It'll be all gone soon.
