this is most likely a Japanese officer's tank sword, as it's only 20" long, my dealer in north Ca. says it was a family sword, goes very nicely in my collection [Linked Image]

thats very difficult to find, some will come with history, then the price goes up, this dealer is very reputable and has family's that bring swords to him, kind of like here people inherit firearms that have no use.

That sword is a Wakizashi - The Wakizashi is similar to the katana but shorter in length. The average Wakizashi is about 50 cm long and was usually worn together with the katana by the Samurai of feudal Japan. When worn together the pair of swords was called daishō, which translates to “large and small”. This sword acted like a side weapon and was worn by the Samurai at all times. The wakizashi was to be carried at all times and even kept under the pillow while the soldier sleeps, as it was used for close-quarter combat, emergencies, and ritual suicide.

That's a cool sword! I was in Japan this time last year and wanted to pick up a sword. Real ones are expensive and are hard to get them back over here. I ended up not getting one and the replica ones are crap. So I came back empty handed!

I have one very similar I inherited as a child (just sits in the safe now), but all metal from the handle to the scabbard. Do not have a clue on the history but would love to find out, any suggestions?

Just like guns, look for any/all markings and start searching on the internet. Maybe post a couple pictures here.

you have been watching too many kung foo movies, it is clearly mounted in Japanese Army mountings, that show the wear of being worn by such.
