Whoever originally mounted this scope didn't appreciate using the correct sized bit for the job so the heads are rounded but I was able to get them out.

Can anyone tell me the correct size of screws to order so I can replace these?.... also if you know a source for vintage/OEM ones I would appreciate that as well.

FYI - 1950 M70 Super Grade in .300H&H, Scope Leupold 2-7, windage adjustable one piece base mount

If you can find a bolt/screw place and take the ones you took out they could order for you.
There is a place in Denton, Denton Bolt Company.

Please just trash those rings all together.

They're probably the most unreliable parts on that rifle.

Located in Austin so the Denton place is out and I'm really not looking to put new torx head screws or anything that would stick out like a sore thumb on a super grade pre-64.

Likewise FiremanJG.... If you know a source for a period correct 1950's set of rings that comes with screws already in it; then I'm all ears; but I'm not going to be that guy slapping a Badger Ordnance rail mount on a Pre 64 Super Grade .300H&H

Then I would have to pack my ammo in an ice chest on the way to the range/hunting ...LOLOLOL

Looking at the rings alone, they don’t look like they’ve changed much. The weak link Jason is talking about is the windage adjustment. Maybe you could just find an ordinary set of Leupolds without it.

Once again .... if you know where to find the base, screws or ANY other part YOU do NOT like about this rifle then I am all ears; that is IF YOU KNOW WHERE THOSE MATCHING PARTS ARE CURRENTLY LOCATED!

Now can anyone actually tell me the correct size and or location of such ring screws?

Deewayne, go talk to your local gunsmith. He likely has a coffee can full of screws. That or call Leupold and tell them what you need. Personally I would swap rings and bases out for a set of dual dovetails. You will like the sleek look on your model 70 super grade and they will be a super upgrade.

Edit to add: while I am a fan of the ease of use and rugged durability of a pic rail mounted set of rings, I would not spoil the lines of that super grade with them either.

Simple Weaver bases will still look correct on that rifle.

The windage screws are the weak link. I especially like the ones that are the more than antiquated, flathead. bang

All the Ace hardware stores I've been in
in this area have a drawer labeled "GUN SCREWS "

I was thinking Ace as well. Mine has hundreds of different size screws in the screw/bolt aisle. Worse case, you may need to get some screws that are slightly longer and cut them to length with a hacksaw.

Thanks,
Rich

At least with the flat head the won’t strip them out? Or maybe they will lol.

Brownells or Midway do have replacement screws. They will likely be 6-48 or 8-40. Most are torx nowadays and don't think it would look bad on a nice pre 64.

Take one as a pattern to American Bolt on Burleson Rd. Right off of Ben White & Montopolis. I would bet Train Riding Money they can match it to a T.

As for ace hardware.... I agree its a great place, even the local one here in Austin used to do FFL transfers - but it's now closed and the only ace hardware is Breed & Co and there are so uppity that mentioning of a firearm in that store will most likely make someone have a heart attack and hug their Biden bumper sticker!

JG.... If the current mount has lasted for 70 years with no issues(other than rounded screws) I think it's good to go.

What Big Fitz said. Brownells or Midway. As cheap as these are, order several including the sizes he recommends. You'll be good.

I have a handful of fire arm tools that I've come to wonder how I ever did without. Digital calipers is one of them. If you can get your hands on a set, measure the length and Ø. You can get TPI and with the Ø you can pull the size from a table. Chasing stuff like this down will make that great rifle mean even more to you. Tell me more about the scope, you know how old it is, still functioning, still putting game on the ground?

And metric and standard thread gauges are too cheap not to have a set.

Had a forum member help me out by giving me a set of old rings to salvage screws; NOPE wrong size.

Went to McBride’s and waited for the list of people buying their allotted amount of 9mm only to be told that the screws are in the gunsmith area- come back Monday.

Drive a few blocks to Breed & Co Ace Hardware store and got my hopes up when I saw all of the screws they have and the elder gentleman working the department simply looked like one of those old timers that gets off on besting younger men on hardware woes......again my hopes were high as I handed him the ziplock bag containing one of the screws as an example, he takes one look at it and says .....

“That’s a gun screw, we ain’t got none of that here, guns is nothing but trouble.”

My hopes dashed I take myself home and scour the internet until finally on eBay I find them.....

Turns out my adversary is a 5x44-3/8”; where as most of them are 6x48

eBay seller located in Gatesville Texas of all places..... go figure

If your guy falls through, recheck eBay. There is a guy in Arkansas that has a full set of red field screws that are brand new old stock to fit your rings. I have the same set on my old browning fn 270.

Longhorn74.... Thanks and yes I did end up buying the true originals for this ebay listing because the ones that came in from Gatesville were the right thread but wrong head.

Good deal! Glad that work out for you. When I first saw those rings, I thought they looked identical to the redfields on my old 270.
