I'm guessing she is either the youngest of the momma cows or she has the youngest baby of them all.

We saw this with the elk at Rocky Mountain National Park this year. One cow would be with three or four calves while the others were off feeding.

Thanks, yes she is just a two and a half year old. She doesn't tangle with the big girls, yet. I have 15 cows in this pasture with a bull. After getting tossed cubing them I got advice here and built a sallyport to cube them. I might have to get a bigger chain on the gate if the bull has his way waiting on me.

That's a great pic! When I was a kid nearly every cow & calf operation had a Brahma cow on the payroll, or at least access to one. If a new mama cow had problems, or worse died, we'd toss the calf in a pen with the Brahma cow. They were huge but gentle as could be, and they'd adopt and let anything nurse, calves that weren't theirs, goats, lambs, didn't matter to them, and start making milk almost immediately.

Yep, we always have 1 cow that stays with the babies.
