Mine as well. Is this an Okie thing or were Otasco's and TG&Y's in Texas as well? A quick check with wikipedia says both had stores in several states. The only ones I ever visited were in OKC.

My grandfather Jim Hodges and his brother owned 3 Hodges grocery stores. Grandpa said when they first put a Piggly Wiggly in at Hwy 67 and Polk Street he said those big chain stores would be the demise of Mom & Pop grocery stores. The news articles about all of the stuff on him made it sound like he was solely responsible for the Saving & Loans collapse.

My Mom worked at Riches in Atlanta, until I was born in 1950. After we moved North, I can now remember Bonwit Teller in NY, as well as Horn&Hardart food auto-marts. My best friend in JH and HS was from Breckenridge Texas, and his folks would only buy stuff from Neiman-Marcus (because it was Texas-quality!!). Driving up and down the East Coast Interstates, we always stopped at Howard Johnson's, or Stuckeys. Best Pecan Divinities ever.

Food Lion is still operating over 1000 stores. It left this area because our local grocers were extremely competitive.

To those who mentioned OTASCO, my wife said thank you! Her grandfather and his brothers started OTASCO in Tulsa and she grew up in that store. I have been fortunate enough to locate a Marlin Glenfield Model 60 22LR and Model 336 30-30 lever action that was sold through the stores with the OTASCO Diamond Jubilee medallion insert in the buttstock. Both are funny stories when I bought them, but those are her guns since they came from her grand dad's stores. Anyway, she wanted me to tell y'all thank you!

There is still a Sutherlands in Corpus, and one in Alice. I normally buy pallets of corn from them as they almost always have the best prices around.

I just realized how much my hometown has lost over the years. When I was a kid we had Western Auto, Whites Auto, Motts 5-10, Gibsons, and a real grocery store.

I wear 2XLT and 3XLT shirts, depending on who makes them...and they have those and I've seen up to 5XLT on the rack with those...not sure how much bigger they go, though.

I bought my first shotgun at Gibsons in Richardson. I have a freezer and dinette set from Montgomery Wards. I have eaten in a Kips Big Boy and shopped at Piggly Wiggly in Richardson. Also have been in the Rexall drug store many times.

I remember when the last Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl merchandise stores shut down never to reopen again.  There use to be one in every shopping center and people selling that stuff out of their vans on every street corner.

As a note, I remember ordering a Ruger 10/22 from Montgomery Wards. I bought my first rifle from Montgomery Wards My old man bought my brother and me each a Japanese WWII rifle at Gibsons, $19.95. There were in a barrel that they had them stacked in. My old man bought 2 more for cousins that were my age. 4 rifles and 4 boxes of shells less than $100.

Surprised to see: FEDMART on pdr55's list...thought they were only in California...bought my first 870 Wingmaster...with paper route money...I grew up on the beach in San Diego, CA...but I got here to Texas as soon as the USBP sent me to El Paso...Did not see: Alpha Beta...Grocery Store or Victoria Station Restaurant...worked as a Prime Rib and steak cutter...man I remember the 20+ pound prime rib roasts...slicing off 8, 12 and the 16 oz "Engineers Cut"...it's where I learned to love the end cut...always was a Medium Rare guy...still like my steaks that way...but if you order Prime Rib end cut Medium...you get an extra 1/2" to 3/4"...3-4 ounces over specified weight...and all the flavor from the "dry rub" of spices... black pepper, thyme, rosemary, garlic salt, onion salt and celery salt, dry mustard...I do my prime ribs deep fried now, injected with garlic butter and not much else...thanks for the trip back in time !!!!!
