It is not about hard or soft it is about the maker.

Would not go less than this.

29" is usually classified as oversized. Depends on what your needs are, suits, multiple days....etc

Whatever you do, I would suggest to not Google the thread title. There is no telling what popups you will get. lol35

I like the lightest I can get.

I have seen way too many pieces of luggages torn up, ripped, wheels broken off, etc while traveling.

I usually travel out of the USA for 30 days at a time, I only take one carry on and a backpack so I can carry that on as well.

I don't have time to check luggage and wait for it at the luggage converoy.

Both.
Sometimes it takes both and then you're really glad that one of them has wheels.

I had soft side for several years. Decided to “upgrade” to hard sided. I’m not really a huge fan of it, kind of wish I went soft sided again.

Get a high-end one (roller board) softsided and make sure it has 4 wheels so you can push or pull it. Don't get the 2 wheel kind you can only drag it. Bought my last one in 2007 and still going strong. Retired now so only used on vacation.
Used to travel 3 weeks out of the month. Mine is a Pathfinder.

Hard sided and small enough to carry on.

Do they still allow hanger bags?

We travel a lot and I prefer the hard sided luggage. Have had soft sided and it eventually gets torn and ragged and usually stained as well. Also, if it's ever raining your stuff will get wet.

I like the hard sided as I don't cringe as much watching it get tossed about. The only drawback is that they take up more space when opened up. I had a cheaper brand with the 4 wheels some years ago and the wheels were trash, so I had to drag it on two wheels. Spend some money and it will roll better.

This is the brand my wife bought me a few years ago: Luggage

Since you don't travel much I would not recommend dropping the coin for Tumi or Louis Vuitton. You could always opt for 5.11 luggage then you would be a TAF Bubba Booger Picker!

I’ve had a Timbuk2 roller that’s held up well for over 15 years.

I also like the RTIC duffles - have a few in each size and have used them on every type of trip imaginable.
