Any predictions on the end of the ammo shortage? Other than shotgun shells for upland birds and waterfowl, I haven't seen any of the centerfire ammo I use for almost three months.

Why don't we have time to do things right the first time, but always have time to do things over, and over, and over?

When it does end (probably next year sometime), do yourself a favor and stock up so you have ammo for the next shortage.

The last major meltdown seem to take over a year to unwind fully ... we'll see what we see, but I wouldn't expect anything good for the next year or two.

I expect it to get much worse before it gets better. I think this could play out for years.

Through 2021 from what I've been hearing. Saw video from CEO of CCI, Federal and Remington and he said they are making it as fast as they can 24X7.

Going to be a long, long time, and maybe years depending on legislation coming down the line!

If this is truly the case, we can expect the wild hog population to explode and the deer population to starve do to population increase.

You have to be kidding. One box of ammo is enough for 4 or 5 deer seasons. That's if you tag out.

Yeah, we will probably need to get a back ground check before we can get a box of ammo!

I would normally agree with that and then started shooting 50+ hogs a year.

PS - I found .308, .243, 9mm and .40 ammo today online in a few minutes of searching. Have 20 boxes coming in. (Buds shipped same day)

I know it's capitalism and if people are willing to pay their prices......found this auction and all I can do is scratch my head. That auction is still going and even if it stopped here, that's over $6 a round. Just crazy.

He was referring more to the hogs than deer. I shot exactly 40 hogs from the second week of october to first week of January. That’s 2 boxes in 3 months. Next year if ammo availability hasn’t rebounded I WONT be blowing through that much ammo just for pigs.

Depends if they actual do enough research to understand what an armor piercing round is. Since basically any round above a .223 will penetrate body armor I wouldn’t doubt it if someone actually figures it out and gives it a try.

Well, go stand in line at your local Academy each morning and pick up 3 boxes per caliber of whatever they have. They get new stuff daily.

You know, I have done that research and don't recall "body armor" being included anywhere in there.

Like I was saying, just wait until they figure out that they can classify any round as "armor piercing", or when someone decides armor piercing includes body armor....

As many of you have done, I have been doing as much industry research as I can and what seems to be constant is the ammo manufactures are producing as much as they can providing that they can get the components. One very interesting conversation with marketing rep. for Weatherby in Sheridan, WY: "we cannot get brass" due to ongoing strikes in South America. All have said that most likly we are looking at 2 years to get back to normal supply and demand. Politics aside, of course.

The new Remington ammo factory that is being built at the Port of Little Rock should come online in 6 months or so.
That should help or at least keep us even. That is if raw material is available to build ammo. You would think if they
Were building a new plant they would have plans for raw material.

I bought a new crossbow. Shooting in the yard with it is cheap, easy. Plus, its deadly on deer and hogs. You just can't shoot very far. I'm saving my rifle ammo for now. I reload, and have enough components to last a long time, if I don't go crazy shooting.

Thanks,

Marty

If your having trouble finding ammo, quit shooting for fun. If you don’t shoot for fun, then you should have enough on hand to last you two years of hunting, otherwise you didn’t plan at all and you can pay the ridiculous prices of the modern ammo world.

I was at Academy today for some jig heads and found a box of Hornady Black 40’s that someone had set down by the tackle boxes. I didn’t need any since I don’t own any guns but I took it over to the ammo shelf and set there with nobody watching and then walked off. It took less than 20 seconds for someone to find it and grab it. LOL

Good lord. That auction I cited yesterday is still going and the bid is up to $1525 for 200 rounds of 6.5 PRC which is $7.62 per round. Utter lunacy! I'll bookmark it and see how it ends up.

Ration your ammo. When hunting hogs, make sure you can line up at least 2 in the sounder. Pull trigger, 2 down with one shot. banana2

The auction got a little crazier and the winning bid was $1625 for 200 rounds of 6.5 PRC. That is over $8 per round or $162.50 per box....just goes to show the power of the law of supply and demand (or the stupidity of people although I guess some people have more money than sense and can spend it how they want.)

The new Remington ammo factory that is being built at the Port of Little Rock should come online in 6 months or so.
That should help or at least keep us even. That is if raw material is available to build ammo. You would think if they
Were building a new plant they would have plans for raw material.

Not sure how much time they lost in bankruptcy, employees were not recalled by Vista to go back to work until last November at the main plant.

The ammo thing is challenging, but not impossible. I guess it depends on the caliber you are shooting, but I have managed to score plenty of 30-06 over the past 2 months - everything from target ammo to fancy hunting ammo. Check the ammo search engines frequently, and be quick on the trigger.

Academy guy told me they had a meeting back in August and they were told that ammo would be caught up be the end of the year. Then before Christmas he said they were looking at April.
I haven't asked him again but I bet it isn't April anymore.

I have been seeing hunting ammo at the boutique gun places in my area. Apache Rifle Works in Comfort had lots of specialty hunting loads in stock when I was there yesterday, Mission Ridge in San Antonio usually has the hunting loads in stock, and my brother in law says he can usually get hunting ammo out in Kerrville were he lives at Hill Country Arms Inc on Sidney Baker St. The Big Box stores are hit and miss as a lot of ammo hoarders are buying up everything to resell like it is a full time job. The real difficult ammo to find is 9mm or anything pistol cartridges, 5.56mm, 300BLK, and the usually cheap 7.62x39 steel cased cheap Russian junk that was plentiful before all the madness. I’m not seeing any light at the end of the tunnel but I can still find .308WIN albeit at $2 a round at a minimum.

It is all that Bass Pro has in stock. It is a good time to be a skeet shooter and foul hunter…

Lately that depends on what store you are at, and what day you are there. I was told to go by Bass Pro in San Antonio because they had racks of bird shot and tons of rifle ammo, nothing. They did have some steel shot (a few scattered loose boxes) which is better than Academy has now.

I'm finding ammo pretty regularly at the mom and pop stores in small towns. Hoffy's in Burnet has a really good selection of most ammo, Rods, Guns, and Strings in Marble Falls has a decent selection, and a shop in Llano just south of 29/16 has a good selection as well. The last time I was in Hoffy's outdoor store in Lampasas, it was stocked pretty well too. I am having trouble finding 22.250 though.

That auction ended and did have a winner, so what you found has to be another auction for more of the same ammo. There's still a lot more suckers out there with more money than sense.

As I was running around last week looking for bird/skeet shot I asked the guy at Academy about 2506 that a friend was looking for. He said to show up early on Monday, that is when they get trucks in.
Well clearly two minutes early ain't enough.

Finally started ordering custom ammo. They are cheaper than gun shows and auctions,

Same here.
I have heard too many people ask me about different ammo. Many have asked if I have spare ammo or if I could go look for it.
After 2009 I determined that would never be me again.

I lucked into 3 boxes of Federal 45 ACP yesterday for $24.95 a box of 50. Beats a sharp stick in the eye.

After someone mentioned in an earlier post the value of their stored ammo, I started thinking about buying a locking cabinet. Then it hit me that because I store all my ammo in a small closet, just replacing the existing door knob with one that provides keyed entry would be much cheaper and probably provide just as much security. Granted, a safe just to store ammo would be the best solution but a locked door is better than nothing. It's a solution that will also keep the grand kids out once they get big enough to go nosing around the house.

I've been assured that this is just veterans restocking their own supply and in no way is this contributing to the shortage of ammo nor the gross pricing done by scalpers gougers scumbags these fine gentlemen.

I dropped by my local Academy early yesterday morning to pick up some fishing tackle. When I left, I noticed a guy in front of me with a shopping card that must have had a dozen or more boxes of 12-guage ammo covering the bottom of it.

Just went to the academy nearest me to look for some Columbia shorts. They had khaki and grey, no spring colors yet. They did have 30-06, 243, 45-70, 6.8 SPC II, 308, 450 Bushy, 7.62x39 and 40 SW. Also 12 and 28 bird shot. There was not a line for ammo.

At 3 boxes per person, must be about 100 + boxes in that line.

I've never gone, but I was told it's 3 boxes per caliber per person. So one could leave with 3-243, 3-270, 3-30/06 etc.

Sign at mine today said 3 boxes per person all calibers.

Stopped by an Academy today and they had .17hmr and 1 box of 10mm

Well, that was about two months ago, that I asked. Maybe they have changed it now so that more customers can get product.

I was at my local Academy Saturday, there were signs all over the place saying 3 boxes of ammo total per person. Then a customer asked an employee about the ammo and he mentioned they are saving one box of pistol ammo per pistol for new purchases. Of course there really wasn't a gun to be seen to buy.
