Shot 2 hogs about three weeks ago on my wheat plot. Drug them off bout 300 yds Was muzzleloader hunting Tuesday and shot a big sow and drug her beside the other ones. All this time and nothing has touched them Shot couple in another big wheat field and they were gone in a couple days. Just wondering why coyotes wont eat them cause there are tracks all over the field road bout 20 yds from dead hogs

The two hogs that I shot Sunday night are still untouched as of this evening, I texted a friend of mine, and he said same thing on his place for a few weeks now. He said he even cut the stomach open on one, and still nothing getting it. Wonder what is up? Taylor county.

Same thing here. In the past, there would have been nothing left after a week. Strange.

This is odd. We've got a cew pigs on the ground that the coyotes haven't touched either. The buzzards are even taking thier time.

We've shot about 8 hogs in the last month, took about 4 days for the buzzards to even care.

Kid shot a big one on my place. Left in an open area about 2 weeks ago. It’s still there. Wish we had pulled it away.

No problem here, though the colder weather seems to slow things down. The hogs “ripen” slower, so the buzzards take longer to find the hogs, and until they open up the hogs, the coyotes don’t get active. That said, 2 or 3 weeks would be a shock.

Hit and miss sometimes.
I have put 200+ pound hogs whole on our gut pile to have them completely 100% gone in 6 hours and i have had them sit there for weeks or months at dried out shells bones with the fur on. In some instances we would dump fresh guts etc. while the old one was still there and the coyotes would eat the new stuff and still leave the old.
We shot a small hog a while back and tossed it in a cactus as we were still hunting. 3 weeks later its still there!

For some reason ours will hardly touch any boars. I shot a medium sized boar and put it in an area we usually dump them and then later put 2 sows in the same spot and the boar was still there. Went back later and boar still there but the sows were gone. Maybe they have enough to eat with piglets they are catching and can be a little more picky about their diet.

I usually drag them where I can see them from a blind and cut them down the loin and across a ham (little cleaner than the gut). Coyotes will be all over them within a day or two. I've killed many a coyote that way.

My bone yard has about a dozen hogs from December still in it. They are slowly getting eaten, but the process is MUCH slower than it was in warm weather. This happens every winter.

I'll offer my experience. I do not assert that coyotes don't eat hogs. I have seen photos. However, they don't seem to be the main consumers of dead feral hogs where I hunt. Nowhere near it. I have placed hogs in front of cell cameras numerous times over the past few years. Not one has been visited by coyotes. Not one. In every instance it has been turkey vultures. According to where you are, turkey vultures may or may not migrate. There is a diagonal line across Texas wherein turkey vultures to the north and west migrate. To the south and east they do not. My hunting grounds fall close to that line. I have noticed that some years they migrate and other years they don't. It has to do somewhat with temperatures as I understand it. Anyway, this year they migrated and every hog we have left laying is still there untouched. I'll try to find that map.

Up here in Childress County they get eaten by the coyotes in a matter of days. I trapped a sounder of 29 and out of the group 15 were less than 80 pounds, too small to sell so I shot them all and piled them about a 1/4 mile from the trap. I went out 4 days later to add more corn to trap and went by to see if they were still there and all I found was one hip and some vertebrae, picked clean. The rest were completely gone no hair no blood nothing. This past 3 weeks I had an Arlo camera set up on a prospective trapping sight, happend to be on the landowners bone pile. I was able to watch the landowner drop off a couple hogs he shot, then how a group of 4 coyotes methodically picked apart starting that very night until they were small enough to drag off. Pretty interesting. I have also had a pile of 8-9 40 pounders sit for over a week before the coyotes found them, then they disappeared almost overnight. My guess is the coyotes just haven't found yours yet.

Once it cools down I don't think the meat ferments very quickly and the buzzards can't smell it so well when its cold for multiple days in a row. Once it warms up a few days they are on it though. Trail cam on dead hogs showed coyotes came in after the buzzards picked the hide and exposed the bones.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

Seems like I notice the slow down in later winter every year also, i wonder what causes that? I would have thought with the more cold etc. of ongoing winter they would want more food.

Every pig I've ever dumped in S Texas was gone in no time regardless of temp. Between the coyotes, buzzards, & Caracaras it happens quick. We have resident populations of each that live near the bone yard and move in as soon as you dump one.
I think that maybe coyotes sometimes tend to stay back from a dead mature boar hog in certain areas because they are scared of it. The smell of a dominant boar may give them caution. Opening them up may make a difference. I've never had to do that, but may help in areas where there are less coyotes. We have a ton and lots of competition for food.

The only 2 hogs I shot were large boars, I was surprised to not see them gone rapidly after dumping, and assumed the same thing: too thick hide and size intimidation. After I opened them up the following day, they were gone pretty quickly.

No coyotes or even buzzards touched them Killed this one 12/27/2020 And they are STILL eating on it (slowly). In the summer months....this hog would be completely gone in 48 hrs.
