I almost never boot my dogs. The only exception is when I hunt areas with a lot of prickly pear or when I hunt the rocky Mearns country in SE AZ. I also boot my dogs if they have a pad injury that isn't severe enough to warrant them not running. I see guys waste time and effort booting dogs for sand burrs here in OK all the time. I've reached the conclusion that dog boots are mostly for the owner instead of the dog.

When I do boot I prefer homemade boots from motorcycle tubes (see YouTube for some videos on how to make them) or the Lewis boots. I saw a guy on Facebook who made boots from duct tape and thought that those would probably work for most guys if they insist on being that worried about sand burrs.

And why, today, remember misses?

I don’t boot the dog that often either. When I do I only boot the front feet and use homemade boots from motorcycle tubes. I will admit there have been multiple times hunting in rocks that I didn’t boot the front feet and should have.... Lava rock is hard on the pads. Especially a dog that doesn’t spend much time in it.

If your dog spends more time trying to pick sand burs out of its feet than hunting, then it’s worth the time to boot them.
When I’ve had to use boots, I used vet wrap, then the nylon boots w/Velcro, and some duct tape around the tops.

These have been my go to for the last 5 years. They will tear a dogs ankle up though, so I wrap with a little vet-wrap, then cover with the boots. We hunt Nebraska, and the burrs there can be a bich. As much as I dislike cabelas and bass pro, these boots have done well for my dogs.

Easy on/off. Velcro works great. Very cost effective.

I use those when need. But use vet wrap on leg first, the inner seam under the Velcro cuts into the dogs leg. Also duct tape on the outside, they come off easily.

I've used them all. Too many times had to carry my dogs out of the field when there were about 5 cacti spines in each paw or 10 sand burrs in-between the paws.

I prefer the cordura with velcro (easier to get on), but still use duct tape at the tops to keep them on.

I only boot for sand burrs, pear thorns don’t seem to slow down my dogs.

with a heavy dew on the ground, nothing stops big pear spines--I've seen them go thru Lewis boots.

Don't waste your time with lewis or motorcycle tubes. These are no nonsense and easy to put on and they stay on.

I do the motorcycle tubes, I have found the 2.5-2.75 width fits most pointers paws well. I have a bunch of Lewis' as well, but I think the closed toe adds another fit complexity / area of discomfort to dogs and the innertube ones are a little lighter and prevents them from getting slung off after the dog gets them wet...if you do Lewises, make sure you cut a V in the back so the top back of the boot doesn't rub up against that back pad of the dog. I have bought the cordura boots before, and they are cheap, but if you have a hard driving big running dog, you can get about 20 dog miles out of them before they start rubbing holes in the bottom (has been my experience with Lion Country etc)

Put some Plasti Dip on the cordura boots and they will last a lot longer. When the dip starts wearing thin, just do it again.
