So I was able to connect on two doe on Saturday morning. One dropped where she stood and one ran off about 35 yards into some heavy brush. I was in my truck and didn't want to get it all scratched up so I took the one that dropped back to the skinning rack to clean. It was nice and cool out so I didn't worry about the other doe too much. I grabbed the ranger and headed to get the other doe about 1 hour later. I was surprised to see this when I got there. Do you guys think it was a Coyote or Vulture? I didn't see any birds in the air as I was approaching so I'm thinking it was a Coyote

Coyote for sure, given the short time it was dead. They would pick up on the blood scent almost immediately. Turkey vultures find carrion by smell, and black vultures by sight. There are very few actual black vultures around, and they tend to be flock animals also.

That's what I figured. Still I was very surprised with how fast he was on that doe. I'll have to setup with a call in that area to see if I can take care of that problem.

Coyote, but I have had a bobcat get to a fresh kill within a few minutes and eat part of a ham also. Had bobcats cover up does after eating part of the ham, with grass before also. Seen vultures and cara caras get on a shot deer within in minutes. I think they hear the shots and come to the spot on ranches where lot of deer are shot late season. Fastest was a cara cara on a doe in less than 2 minutes.

Used to bow hunt a military base in Arkansas that was covered in coyotes. You learned to track immediately after shooting a deer instead of waiting. Oftentimes it was a race to see if you or the yotes got there first. Occasionally, they won. Buddy had half an 8-point eaten in 45 minutes when he made a less than precise shot.

I've chased a coyote off a kill in less than 5mins. Amazing how they associate a gun shot with a dinner bell sometimes.

My first hunt on the Chaparral, under David Synatske who had been there 25 years, was an eye opener. They specifically told us NOT to wait 30 minutes after the shot to go to our deer, if we wanted anything left!!! Coyotes will be on it immediately.

And what is strange is I have 3 coyotes laying in the pasture and nothing will even touch them. They just lay there and rot.

I'd take a coyote I killed or trapped to a different area entirely, and set traps around it. Usually 3 traps within a radius. Sure enough, after a couple days, I'd have a coyote. Sometimes two. The guy that taught me that said it works better if you bring the coyote from outside the area. Seen coyotes eat dead coyotes quite a bit too. Some they completely eat in a day or two. Others they won't touch. Not sure why.

Fastest was a cara cara on a doe in less than 2 minutes. I've had that happen as well with cara cara. Doe goes down in the sendero and not 10 minutes later the cara cara was on top of my doe. This was particularly annoying since my plan was to keep hunting without throwing my scent around and causing too much noise. Anyways, got down and managed to get it spooked away. Did get another doe about 45 minutes later that day.

When I lived up in the Hill Country, the buzzards would move out in the coldest months. Cara Cara's were not seen back then. Anything that we put in the gut dump was there until it warmed up a bit. I was up in NW Gillespie County the last week of the year and we actually saw 3 buzzards on a warm day circling that ranch. New Years day the weather changed and they left.

I’ve had hogs on a bow kill within an hour.
