Based on the pictures, it looks like the youngin gave up after going in the cactus. Was that the end?

I did not see any wounds or blood on either buck...they both came back into that feeder area at least two more times that evening. This fight was at 4:38 that afternoon. A doe came in and got several of the younger bucks attention till the older buck came in a bit later.
The younger buck held his own and gave the older buck all he wanted till the older buck got under him. He then turned the head on the younger buck(like a steer wrestler would) and started to drag/push the buck towards the blind. At that point I just knew the older buck would break the younger bucks neck if that young buck stumbled or fell. When they got to the cactus it was like the younger buck knew it was there and almost stepped/jumped over it...at that point the older buck took him to the ground. I thought he would break his neck at this point but the older bucks momentum kinda rolled him over the top of the buck and he stopped. That allowed the younger buck to get his legs under him and break free. He was leaving in those last 2 pics. Normally the buck that wins will chase and hook the fleeing buck but the older buck just ran a couple of steps and stopped, watching the younger buck run off into the brush. The fight did "rattle" in 2 more bucks that came in and one was a 4 yr old 5x5 that the younger 5x4 bowed up on and walked him off the sendero a bit later.

My bad, I thought the younger was bloodied up on the neck in this picture. Must just be fur direction or coloration

Not saying he did not have any blood on him, but when he came back in after the fight I did not see any sign of it. You would expect to see it with the tines in the face, head and neck areas. What you are seeing is the same thing I saw when looking at the pics...signs of off colored hair. Could be he did not shed all of his summer coat completely or his winter coat is starting to turn off color. I noticed this on a couple of bucks. Could be something else but still noticeable on a couple of bucks.
Here is that buck right before the fight and then the last pic is right after it. If you look at the last pic you can see the red colored hair behind his front shoulders and down his leg. Same thing on his hindquarter on the longer hair below his tail down his leg.

While they were scrapping, did any other deer come out and watch?

Excellent photographs.

Great series of photos up Might want to consider building a slide show of that and posting to YouTube?

It was cool to watch and everyone I have ever seen was just as cool...many were shorter and a few were even much longer. It is a rare site to see when you see one in person. Several things have to line up for it...right time of the season, right buck to doe ratio, right 2 bucks at the same location at the same time, the bucks have to be in a location you can see them and you have to be there to witness it. Then throw in wanting capture it on camera and it adds another very limiting factor. I have been luck to see many fights over the years and even luckier to get many on camera. I have to learn to read deer and their posture and then have the camera setup to capture that fight. This one I had the camera ready and made a minor adjustment to the settings to capture movement on that overcast afternoon. I could read the older bucks posture as soon as he stepped out and how the other bucks reacted to him. I could tell he was not from that area and had just traveled in looking for does. The camera did the rest.

While it does happen from time to time it is amazing it does not happen with every fight (that lasts for more than a few seconds).

Thanks again everyone. cheers

For those interested these photos were all taken with the camera set on Program Auto(due to moving animals) and moved to 640 ISO at f4 so that I could get the shutter speed to 1/250s or 1/320's. Being dark and knowing the animals would be moving, I was wanting to keep the pics clear and not as blurry from their movement with faster shutter speed. I should have run the ISO up a bit more to 800 or either went to shutter priority mode if I had had more time to do the adjustments.

The fight was amazing to see and the ability to capture that quality of photo with all that movement is way over my limited photography skills. I try to take a pic of a buck when he is stone still and if he moves his head up or down it completely blurs it. Of course I have admitted many times I havent tried to do anything much with the camera except full auto and often times my subjects are a good ways off. As always, thanks for posting and giving tips as well.
