... Shoot a deer on level ground that has 500 yards of open property behind it and a barbed wire fence at the end and feel confident your bullet would stay on your property?

Without question, because I would not shoot, if I thought there was any chance of me missing my shot placement. Notice, I said missing my shot placement, not missing.

If you miss, no guarantees. I think the bullet hits the ground before it gets to the fence, but bullets can skip across the ground like rocks across a pond. If you hit the deer, no way the bullet leaves the property.
Given that, I make no claim as to the ethics involved in making the decision. Too many other variables would be involved in the real world.

All depends on the rest I have and how far the shot is. If I have a rock solid rest and the deer is under 350 yards I'd send one into his wheelhouse!
High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Just to throw a little science and math at the question.
Using the ever popular 6.5 Creedmoor round and Hornady's 143 ELD-X as the projectile and a muzzle velocity of 2700 fps, and a 100 yard zero, you'll have somewhere north of 50 inches of drop at 500 yards. Assuming you're shooting more or less level, the bullet should hit dirt on your side of the fence if you happen to miss completely.

The Creedmore shoots flatter than anything else out there. It's the most powerful new round. More like a laser beam than a bullet. With any other round, Yeah, I'd take that shot. With my Creed...I wouldn't chance it.

When I was much younger and could see much better with my equipment....4x scope, 3006..w/150gr.....my confidence level was great at 250 yd.s..@ 251yd.s out of my range...sorta of speaking. No way for me to try anything further. However, if I were hunting land were my average shot was 400-600 yd.s. I would buy equipment to handle the job. I can't see me shooting blind at a distance that I wouldn't know what I would hit. I wouldn't shoot such that my bullet would cross a fence and endanger anyone. Safety first. No deer is worth gambling in any way. If someone was sitting down hunting...the chance of hitting someone would be almost impossible...but me-personally ..wouldn't do it. For the folks that have the equipment ..and the talent..can make the shot and willing to gamble that bullet would travel past the deer and hit nothing...a personal thing, I suppose. I don't have the talent nor the intelligence.

He is saying shoot a deer that if you miss, you are 500 yards from your bullet crossing the neighbor's fence.

Yes I would. Red, u going somewhere with this? Sounds like an off-season question/thread, oh, that’s right, it is off season for most. Huds post, as usual, was classic.

Between my kinds and I we have pulled the trigger 9 times on 7 deer and 2 pigs with my 6.5 and have recovered 7 deer and 2 pigs. I don’t understand why there are so many 6.5 haters out there. Most commonly used deer rounds will have 40-50+” of drop at 500 yards. Long range accuracy does not imply flat trajectory.

Your right, I did assume the shot would or could be long range upping the chance the bullet could get away from ya. The fence is still 500 yd.s in open land...with a miss the bullet will travel a long ways. I usually try to have brush to help stop the bullet. If there is open land behind the shot I will wait for a safer shot...at least as safe as I can make it. I have neighboring hunters that hunt 5 ft. from my fence and I try not to shoot towards them even though I have some brush between me and the other hunters. I also don't hunt on a fence line. My hunters don't hunt a right away just because of the danger. We also have a high hunter density around our property. I just don't want to take a chance. Most hunters would, I suppose, as most hunters will hit their deer and assuming the bullet would not carry very far. I'm probably too careful. I don't have a problem with other hunters making those type of shots as long as their not shooting towards my lease with open land.

As far as the 6.5 goes.....good round but IMO just another fad that has made sellers and gun builders a ton of cash the last few years much like most of the short magnum calibers did before that.
High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Im going to be shooting a 54 caliber 315 grain maxi-ball out of an 18 inch barrel carbine hawkin replica. Its ballistic coefficient is non existent and I can only guess it would be LUCKY to be going 1200 fps at the muzzle.
I do not believe that it would leave the property anyway, but I will be taking a shot where the other side of the fence is clear also.
