Anyone plant duck weed in a pond to draw ducks in?

How did it do?

And are you glad you planted it or wish you would have gone in a different direction?

Seems like it could get out of control quick.

I'd look at smartweed and sago pondweed if it was my place.

Try planting smartweed and HOPE it gets out of control...when ducks arrive, they will knock it back.

I planted Japanese millet and wont do it again. Had sections come in nice, and alot of it didnt. Looking into smartweed, and some wild millet next year. Also, if you have a levy'd system like me, it will be nice to have3 something that will re-seed itself every year!

If you can't control water, anything you "plant" is a crap shoot. Sago, smartweed, duck potato, etc all need certain water levels. Got turtles?? They will eat the seed you get out. Get hit with an algae bloom which impacts sunlight to the bottom where the seed is. Germination isn't happening. How do I know all this, can its all happened to me. I will probably try wild rice again this year. 4' of water to moist soil, throw it out by hand and hope it hits good ground. Its not perfect, but I believe its the best thing for my ground. The alternative is becoming an outlaw and finding duckweed somewhere and transplanting it to my tank.

I would not plant it on a pond. I have seen small bodies of water covered up in it, and no ducks. When water is completely covered in it, I have never seen ducks. I think they like to swim up to it to eat it, not swim in it. Also, seems I never see them in green duck weed, always seems they like the golden/brown duckweed.

Most articles I read said find it in the wild and scoop it up. But I think in Texas its illegal to move from one body of water to another.

I'm leaning towards the wild celery and duck potato, but the sago pondweed looks like it may be good as well.

Guy, is this golden/brown duckweed?

Awesome pics Guy! If anyone knows about the different food sources it's Guy. He's taught me a lot over the past years about it. I would say ducks eat duck weed but it's not their favorite food source. If there's vegetatation with more seed such as millet, or smart weed they will be in that first.

I think the duck weed is green early season, then turns brown/golden when it gets cold. This was early teal season 2020, did not see one duck.

Yeah, looks like it, especially that close up pic I show. I have never really looked at it this close till now. Looking at it from a distance, it looks the same. But this makes me think maybe I never seen duck weed, it is all mosquito fern.

The last pic you posted looks like duck weed.
Mosquito fern is that red color and has like a flower look to it. Duck weed looks like a single seed.

I can't remember what stuff we were hunting in that year but it was duck crack. I've never seen ducks drop into a place like that in my life. Also have never seen that many duck hunters in one spot. When I say "Duck Weed" this is the stuff I'm talking about. [Linked Image]
