As per everyone, this year was weird. We have a 100 acres in Menard. We aren't trophy hunters, mostly meat hunters but if a trophy comes along its just a bonus. We didn't get to hunt Thanksgiving because my wife and I both got covid. Made it to sit in the stand 3 days over Christmas break. Not only did I kill the biggest buck we've seen, we saw 3 that were bigger than anything we have ever seen. I feel like the hunting pressure was way down this year. We saw more numbers than we have seen in years. The last day I was walking to the stand and saw an old, good sized 8. Tried stalking it. Got off a not so great shot kneeling down. Pretty windy and didn't get a good steady shot off. Tried to get closer but he saw me and it was take or shot or he was gone. Ended up getting this one. For a low fence 100 acre place I feel pretty happy about this one. We also saw a ton of Axis this year. Gonna try for one in the spring.

Got plans for a Texas Version of Sheppard Pie.

As a bonus, my loves venison but has never been keen on hunting. She sat it the stand with me for the first time ever and loved and said she might even try and shoot one next year.

My wife was dealing with her mother’s illness last year and her passing this year so she hasn’t been with me. Miss her being there. Plus she is one heck of a shot. Hope your wife joins you again soon.

Congrats, especially on getting the wife in on the hunt.

I used to hunt a 60 acre place along the San Saba, east of Menard. Never saw a whole lot of deer and never saw much of size but I sure do like that area. Good job!

Surprisingly you didn’t see deer along the river

Pretty 8 point!

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!
