I’ve killed my share. So have others here. But, saw some hogs the other day. No rifle with me. All at once, a coyote ran in, grabbed a young one and left before the sow could react.

Then I realized that the song dog was about the only natural predator on Porky. I’ll never shoot another one.

All comes down to your location and situation. Many studies on this. Hogs kill a lot more newborn fawns than coyotes, but not adults. Coyotes will kill any they can, be it young or old, but not as many as the hogs. there's LOTS more hogs too. Are you gonna utilize the hide from the coyote? If not, then let it be.

I believe the upswing in the coyote population is because of the wild hog population our fawn crops have been decimated by coyotes I had a trapper come in last year and in made a huge difference in our fawn crop survival we were seeing only 1 maybe 2 fawns/year make it to hunting season opener 2020 we had a bunch of fawns survive
We shoot every coyote and hog we see plus we trap hogs too
I hate coyotes

NO hog or coyote gets a pass on my place. We are overrun with both. This is the first deer season, I have not seen a coyote. Have killed 5 hogs though.

Texas, im confused. Are you saying the coyotes or the hogs have hurt your fawns? Did the trapper get coyotes or hogs?

Trapper caught coyotes it made a huge difference in our fawn survival
I believe with wild hogs having piglets all year long give coyotes more to eat helping the coyote population to explode
The first thing the trapper ask me was do you have many squirrels I told very few he said you have a coyote problem
We even have a lot more squirrels this year after he trapped all spring and summer
The fawn crop was the best I’ve seen since I bought the ranch in 2016

Do coyotes have a preference between deer and pigs? I've never lived around pigs, so I've never thought about it. Curious.

Had a dear old rancher friend in Leon County that saw the same thing you did. He also started giving coyotes a pass also.

^^^^^ I agree with this. Hard to keep the population down on either of these predators for any length of time.

We have coyotes for the first time in almost 30 years. I promised my boy a hide so if I see one, it's dead. Hogs are shot on sight.

I prefer shooting hogs over coyotes. Except fhose in traps, I have never shot a bobcat. Hogs eat and get into everything. Coyotes can help to force a balance which man can't provide and never will. Plain & simple, no coyotes means there is little to check the resident rodent population. Pick your poison.

If interested in increasing fawn survival, consider knocking the beJesus out of coyotes in the spring. Putting a dent in them at that time will prove beneficial.

For those that think coyotes are keeping the feral hog numbers in check...

Please do read.

Especially if you are concerned about fawn crop or livestock, and are sparing coyotes.

The reason my rifle and range finder are beside me in my truck, in my Kawasaki Mule, in my tractor, while working in the shop, and inside the house is if I see a hog or coyote, either one is getting shot. No passes, ever.

It is rare to see deer in the area.

The OP observed a coyote snatch a piglet. I was interested in that, because in my bird dog's first full season, he retrieved three feral piglets. I have heard of others with similar experiences. A guy in South TX showed me a video of his bird dog retrieving a feral pig piglet. And someone on THF, I think it was Smokey Bear, posted pics of his dog retrieving a piglet.
All of this puzzled me. My dog made it look easy. It seems fairly easy for a dog to catch a piglet without the mother intervening. It made me wonder: Why don't we hear more about coyotes killing piglets? Maybe it happens more often than we know.

Thank you for sharing that link. Informative. But where does it prove your point? "Overall, the predatory impact of coyotes on feral hogs is unknown."

For the record, I don't have strong feelings on whether we should be concentrating on killing hogs, coyotes, or both.
