Hi all,

I just wanted to post my experience with Port Sullivan Ranch and why I hope spending hard money helps you all avoid this mistake. We booked a hunt a Port Sullivan Ranch in the spring and we sweated our - off in the blind. I had a shot and I took it. I made a bad shot and hit my axis doe high and in the bowels. I acknowledge my error; however, the land owner would not let us look for the wounded animal. We weren't allowed to leave the stand. The guides were under strict orders to have us eat versus looking for my deer. The next morning, I sat in the blind for 3 hours waiting for permission to look for my downed deer. I spent 45 minutes looking for it and it was down 40 yards. It was about 80-85f and everything was lost. I was gutted that I killed this beautiful animal for no reason. The land owner was only concerned about getting the money. I acknowledge my shot placement- the landowner said if we shot anything other than a doe, it would be about $2k increase- so it was more intense shot that usual.

Further, my dad also paid for an axis doe. He did not see one in the fenced ranch and the land owner offered a follow up hunt to harvest his animal. We have texted and called the land owner several times and we have not received any response. It was paid for upfront, which in hind sight, was an expensive wildlife watching experience.

In closing, I would not recommend Port Sullivan. The land owner spent more time talking about hosting Clay Mathews and complaining about him wanting to spend money, than helping us get on deer in a fenced property. If you save your money for an exotic hunt, look elsewhere.

Thanks for the report. I never heard of the ranch so I did a quick search and it seems like a decent place, but only 265 acres. A small ranch means that they are buying animals and releasing them for people to come shoot them, and they have to keep buying them to keep up with demand. Sounds like you where there when they where low in animals to shoot.

What was the reasoning for not allowing you to go retrieve your axis doe after you shot it? This makes zero sense to me, and even stranger is why would you listen to them and not look for it on your own?

Seems like a less than ideal situation. Sorry to hear that.

I bet they probably had several other blinds on that small of a place and didn't want them wandering around and into someone else's hunt.

Very interesting to hear. I did a hunt with them last year for fallow deer. Paid a deposit and balance upon completion of the hunt. Told them I did NOT want to sit in a blind and wanted to spot and stalk. Very accommodating and had a great hunt; shot a fallow buck and blackbuck doe and never saw the inside of a blind. Saw lots of animals, including axis. Lodge was also really nice and the food was great too.

We’re you ever able to get an explanation why you couldn’t go look for the animal? Sounds awfully strange; seems fairly standard to do after a shot.

If you died tomorrow, what would you have done today...

The owner was up in the guides neck about dinner being ready. It was all about the owner having dinner ready and not wanting the guide to spend more time in the field. I would have not eaten if I could have found my deer. The guy is a touch bit perplexing. I heard more about Clay Matthews hunting at his place than the plan for my hunt. I would have found my game if I would have had this experience. My dad paid for a deer and didnt see one and didn't get a refund or another hunt. He paid $650 to sit in a sweat box.

I shot an axis at sullivan ranch. I had a terrible shot. One that makes a hunter cringer. I had a wounded animal. In this high fenced property, the owner was more enticed about what we thought of his cooking than the welfare of an animal. My father paid for an axis doe, saw none, and was still charged the full amount. He was offered another hunt, but that never came to fruition. I own my bad shot, but this was an unfortunate experience to be duped out of money.

Dude you have made a grand total of 6 posts. 5 of them are complaining about this one hunt.

#1) Learn how to do some research on a place before plunking down the cash.
#2) Get everything in writing so you know exactly what to expect.
#3) LEARN HOW TO SHOOT!

I don't know the hunter nor the ranch but something sounds very fishy. After looking at their website and testimonials it sounds like a very nice and well run operation.

I shot a beautiful Chocolate Fallow Deer LAST year on THE WORST RUN HUNT, I've ever been on. Expensive too.

They used to advertise here but stopped.

My first thought when I read this.....again....
