I inherited a few rifles from my father. Some I remember from my childhood and will never let go but others he acquired later in life and I never saw them until I was cleaning out his safe after he passed. I am a pretty sentimental guy and in general am hanging on to everything that was his.

On to my dilemma. Some of these newer guns of his I never would conceivably shoot. He had a couple 300 win mags and I don’t like the recoil nor do I ever hunt anything big enough to need them. He also had several varmit calibers like 204, 22-250, etc and I can’t envision needing more than one of them.

I was thinking maybe sell three of these guns that I would never use and buy myself one really nice custom rifle that would be my go to deer rifle. On one hand selling some things I wouldn’t use to buy something I would seems pretty smart but I am worried I may regret it at some point down the road. Thoughts?

Personally I don’t care what they were I wouldn’t even contemplate selling them. They were your dads and in years to come you will look back with regret if you do sell them. Just my opinion,

You never can tell what you may regret later but since you are keeping the ones that he used and have highest sentimental value, your chances of regret will be much lower.

Sell them. Just because your dad owned something doesn't mean it has sentimental value. Did you keep all of his hammer, screwdrivers and handsaws? What about his lawnmower? A gun that you didn't know he had, and wont ever shoot is not worth having imho.Trade them all in on something you will appreciate.

They're just things. You can't take 'em with you. I spent a lot of years wanting certain things that my parents owned. Some I got, some I didn't. Most of the things that I got weren't really that much of a thrill when I finally had them. Life is about people, not things. up Do what makes you happy.

Agreed. Keep the ones that matter and get something that matters to you.

I'd sell any that didn't have specific sentimental value from your childhood. Buy yourself something really nice with the proceeds and think of the good times you had with your Dad when you use it.

I just had the same situation. Got several from my grandfather and will keep them all. Only one I don't have a real use for is a .225 win but I like it just because it is unique. 25-06 I got will be a great gun for kid or wife one day. The others I've justified keeping and I have an agreement with my cousins that if we ever don't want one we give it to someone else in the family or if we sell we use the proceeds to do something together.

Actually I did. I built a 1500 square foot shop at my place just to store all of my parents belongings in. I have 2-3 times the tools dad had but I have kept all of his separate. Don’t know what I will ever do with them but I definitely have fond memories of wrenching on things with dad as a child.

As to the guns I am considering selling two of the three have never been shot and still have the tags on them.

You could even have a custom engraved plate set into the stock: ‘Thanks Dad’

Sell them and use the money to buy something that can be used to maintain, protect, or restore the ones you intend to keep.

I have an old .22 rifle that belonged to my grandfather and that I had restored to "like new" condition. I have no intention of ever selling it so returning it to a condition where it will last longer was more important than reducing it's collector value.

I have got my fathers rifles when he passed as well as one of my Grandfathers. I gave the one from my Grandfather to my Son. My fathers I kept. When I pass my Son can then decide what he wants to do with them. They are just objects. Memories are what count. Not objects.

I’d sit on them a bit longer before making any decision. Especially that you are now starting to get out hunting with your son, maybe he will want them as he gets more fond of hunting, etc.

I am 67 years old and I have sold exactly one gun in my lifetime. (I sold a Taurus revolver that I longer shot) I have given away several but only one was sold.

I am big on keeping them in the family. If you just don't have any interest in some of them, spread the joy to a family member who would cherish it. If they were high-dollar collectibles and I was hard up for money, I might react differently.

I had the same dilemma several years ago; I sold one gun and passed the others out to my kids, I ended up with 4 guns that the kids can argue over when they kick dirt on me

Sell them and get something you will use and enjoy.

My grandfather left me his guns when he passed ...I kept the ones that we shot together or hunted with that held sentimental value, the rest were sold off...I dont need a bunch of guns I'm not going to shoot or that dont hold any meaning to me
