I have a 4' X 4X 8' hog trap. Pig goes in, hits the wire cable that lets the door close and it is trapped. Standard pig trap. My problem is I keep trapping deer. I have lowered the door opening size to a height of about 30". Deer still squat down and go in the trap. Last two times I have set the trap I caught two deer each time. It's very traumatic for the deer but we have successively let them out. I used soured corn the first time but caught deer. I decided it wasn't soured enough and soured the heck out of a second batch and used it and caught two more.I couldn't believe they would eat something that stunk that bad. Sohere ismy question. Is there a bait hogs like that deer will not touch? Thanks.

Corn soaked in diesel, assuming you're not going to eat the pig. But I do have trail cam pics of coons eating it, that some say doesn't happen.

I've seen on a couple of other forums that some people go insane over this idea, environmental concerns, cruelty to animals, yada, yada. Pigs are just big rats. You poison rats.

How about meat? Deer aren’t carnivores but pigs are definitely omnivores.

Shoot a pig, keep it somewhere cool (or don’t, I remember from TV that stinking rotten meat attracts gators better so..? Lol!) and put pieces out.

Prolly get some yotes that way too

I put a piece of fence wire across the opening of my trap about six inches below the top. I put another piece inside about 18" in from the entrance. It seems to have worked reasonably well so far to exclude deer. I have caught one doe after I installed the wires. The theory is that the deer will hit the wire but not be able to see it and it'll cause the deer to back out of the trap. For bucks with antlers it does seem to work. While I don't like catching does either, at least they're easier to release than antlered deer.

I wonder if splashing some diesel around the trap and the entrance might help deter the deer without affecting the meat, if you are worried about it. But to be honest I have read stuff about mixing herbicides with diesel, as an approved method in some cases. I saw something about it here, in a thread about prickly pear, and found it interesting enough to take it to google.

Diesel in the corn may not even effect the meat. I imagine some are eating diesel corn on other properties anyway.

It might be worth trying to pour diesel on the ground outside the entrance, I know for a fact the pigs will dig a huge hole wherever you pour it though. I’m surprised someone hasn't designed a feeder than sprays diesel in all directions lol. Their so bad about it when we fuel up a tractor or mulcher we have to make sure we don’t spill any or their will be a hole thr very quickly.

I have sprayed diesel on corn and on the trap but even in a bad drought they it will not stop every deer. I have also used larger sized range cubes for bait. What I do now is to put a used cattle tub in the trap and fill it will feed that is covered in water. Keep it full of water and it will sour to attract hogs. I have cut thorny brush limbs to cover the door up on traps that hogs will root thru or under to get in the trap..the limbs keep the deer out.

Sour the corn with sugar, cheap beer, water, yeast, and jello. Once it ferments the hogs will eat it but deer won’t. I’ve never used diesel

I have never baited with diesel so I know nothing about it. We effectively used leftover bacon grease and cooking grease around the traps and feeders targeting hogs. I didn’t have trail cams on it so I don’t know what the hogs were doing around it but they sure tore hell outta the areas we put it down.

I asked the same question last year. A fellow THF member suggested that I spray WD40 around the door frame of the trap. It worked great. Hogs seem to like the smell and the deer stay out of the trap.
Re spray the door frame frequently to keep the odor fresh.

Don’t know what kinda of trigger but I would say to fix the trigger a different way. Fix it we’re hogs have to root under or around to move it and set it off. Normally deer will just eat where corn is easy to access.

Corn+Diesel. Maybe cut the top off of your trap?

up I finally cut the top outa one and a side panel out of another to let the deer out. It's not worth it trying to catch that big boar hog.

Put corn in 5 gallon can and soak it in diesel at least overnight.
Drain it and put more corn in leftover diesel for next day.
It will keep coons and deer off of it until first rain or two good morning dews then it's back to open season on your corn.
