we've got 4 more to calve out of 16 cows on one place, got about 5 heifers at the home place ready to pop any minute!!

Beautiful calf

Calving season is my favorite time of the year. We worked calves yesterday with only family members. No outside help needed this year. With six grand kids ranging from 8 years old to 17. They are becoming pretty good hands. 5 boys and one girl. The 15 and 17 year old boys were glad to turn over the calf pushing to the younger bunch. The two 11 year old boys pushed the calves to the calf cradle and son and son in-law handled the castrating, ear notching and shots. Every one had their job. Older boys ear notched and ear tagged. Daughter in law handled lunch for everyone. Nana was the book keeper and kept track of ear tags numbers and number of steers and heifers. All I had to do was hold the steer calves leg back during castration. Only a couple of near misses on getting my arm broke a couple of times. Easiest year for me in a long time. Traditions are important. Keeping everyone involved and good memories build the roots deeper into the ranch. Hopefully this way of life will continue after I'm gone. If not, the memories made for me are priceless.
