But I'll ask it anyway

BARREL LIFE

6mm Dasher, 105gr Bergers, 2956fps

Just a real answer will be fine. I'm looking at a used rifle, need to see what's left in the throat.

It depends on your accuracy requirements for the rifle, and there are a lot of variables that factor into the equation too.

For barrels that have seen competitive use exclusively, I would expect most dashers to be "shot out" anywhere between 1500-3000 rounds... In my discipline anyway; PRS you could probably go a long time on a dasher barrel.

For barrels that have been pasture plinkers or hunting rifles (i.e. low rates of fire), I would imagine you could get north of 2000 pretty easily.

For context, when I say shot out, I would still expect all these guns to hold less than 1" at 100.

Keep in mind, these are just rough numbers. I just had a .308 Win barrel kick the bucket just north of 900 rounds...sometimes barrels just go earlier than others.

If this is a used rifle from an unknown source, I would just assume the barrel is shot out regardless. Relative to other calibers, most of my 6mm barrels look pretty worn after a few hundred rounds. It would be difficult to estimate an accurate round count.

The 6 Dasher holds about 32 to 34 grains of powder and pushes a 105 grain about 2900-2950. It's a modest velocity with a low powder charge. But barrel life depends on how fast or slow you shoot between shots and how hot you run your ammo. A competition barrel in a PRS match vs. a range gun you shoot at a slower rate, the range gun will last much longer. You can shoot 5 to 10 rounds in 30 to 90 seconds in a match and that will accelerate the wear. But a normal 6.5 CM or 6.5x47L that holds 40-43 grains of powder will easily last 2000 to 3000 rounds. I would see a 6 Dasher being similar to that. The lower powder charge helps, but having a 6mm bore instead of a 6.5mm will increase wear slightly.

But Buzz, barrel life and how you sell firearms quickly, should be a zero factor!!

Holy cow, Ricky Bobby. What were you shooting? I had a buddy shoot out a 308 with a match chamber running 175's about 3000 fps in about 1100 rounds. He went from shooting same hole to not even being able to keep it on a 6" plate at 200 yards. I had never seen a 308 Win go out like that.

44.7 of N150 with a Berger 200.20x @ 2650.

Most of my barrels will last anywhere between 1500-2500 rounds before I pull them.

When this barrel kicked the bucket I took it out to my ranch to try and troubleshoot. I tried to rework the load using N150, working up from 44gr (all my barrels will shoot with 44.4-44.7gr of N150). I then tried to rework it with Varget. I tried bumping my depth node out .012 and working back in.003 increments.

None of that worked. It was shooting like 3-5" at 300...totally unacceptable.

For context, I have two rifles setup for competitive use; they're identical (Panda F-Class actions, McMillan XIT stocks, NF Comps).

I screwed the problem barrel into my 2nd gun, and it still shot he same.

I took it home and IOSSOed it to the point that I probably damaged it, and tried one more time. Nope. Done.

Screwed a new barrel on there, and it came about 1/2" of shooting a new national record at 1,000 it's first week out.

A rare case of an infant mortality IMO.

Edit: It was a sad loss too, because prior to its early death it was probably the most consistently accurate barrel I'd owned. In final load dev it was shooting under .25 MOA at 300 yards consistently. 100 yard groups could have probably placed in a local SR BR match. It was that good.

Powder choice and it's heat potential matter a good bit along with what Chad mentioned above.

My accuracy requirements is probably significantly smaller than most from a dasher/brx....last 6 different br improved barrels and all have been pulled prior to 1,300 rounds. If it was worth your time you could tweak loads and get them shooting again but from that point forward in my experience you are always screwing with the load to keep it shooting...not worth it to me. Pull it and spin up/on another. I pulled one very accurate (one of the better barrels I ever had) barrel at 998 rounds...when I pulled it I had just shot a match at Spanish Fort and was in the shoot off with that barrel...but it had opened up and I knew it. Wasn't worth a crap in a shoot off but I could break clays with it on the regular, I think I shot a 39 that last match with that barrel and came in next to last in the 4 man shoot off.

You ask this question from a bunch of guys who shoot exclusively 6br improveds and you'll get a bunch of different answers. Main reason is because some guys will work to get every last ounce of use out of a barrel and others (like me) will say screw it I know this song and dance and it's time for a new one.

I don’t have a dasher, but I have a 6ppc, and a 6br and I know a ppc in a benchrest situation seems to start to loose it’s edge around 900 rounds but the br seems to hang in there way longer..

It all comes down to how you treat it and how fast and hard your running it. I used to have a 300 Jarrett and it was a hoot, smoking fast but totally shot out 6-700 tops even running it slow.

Buzz, the 6mm barrels wil burn out faster than the 6.5. I don’t have any experience with the 6br or dasher but I’ve gone thru 2 6creed barrels and they average 1300. Before I started shooting the 6mm I was shooting the 6.5 and I went thru 3 barrels I’d say averaged 1500-2000rds. I don’t think it’s a magic number out there it’s just some barrels will last a bit longer than others, some will have bad carbon rings, get fire cracking easy and some just plain shoot lights out. Just look on the bright side shooting my 28 nosler I prob won’t even reach 600-700 rds and it will be toast. Good luck with the 6dasher I think you will be very happy!

My 6 brx (basically a dasher) held sub moa till 2800 and change. It was used in a few prs matches not main rifle and spent most of the time as a range toy. But once it 2900 it went to hell. I was using the ELD-M fyi. It’s a solid round and if had to do it again would go with standard 6br.
