This move I like alot!

7-08 for me. Something like a heavy-ish 18-20" barrel.
Mostly because I am really into reloading these days and there are more 7mm bullet options. Maybe it's just me but it seems like new 6.5mm, 7mm and 30 cal are coming out all the time versus other bullets, .277 for example.

As for the short vs long action, imo unless you're actually getting an action where the overall size is different then it's fairly a mute point. Such as the Remington 700, I believe the the short action calibers are literally in shorter actions and therefore a weight savings. Now here is a Tikka critique, their actions are the same for all centerfire with the bolt stop dictating how far back to stroke. This has many advantages but not weight savings. Just talking smack. I'm a Tikka fanboy too.

I'm a dude who likes long barrels!

Yep, 6.5 Creedmoor (you have to spell it out) kills them deader plus their is the added benefit of driving the haters a bit crazy.

The 6.5 creedmoor is the Chevy S-10 of the cartridge world....it serves most people adequately but isn’t anything special.

The difference is the majority of the people who drove S10’s didn’t act like it was a raptor....they were smart enough to realize there were better trucks on the road.

Most Creedmoor owners are a lot like vegans. Can’t wait to tell you how much smarter they are than you grin

Great question. I may be about to add both calibers to the pile.

I own both. Here is my take. If you are first and foremost a target guy then you probably also reload, get the 7-08 for the great selection of 7mm target projectiles. If it is for a dedicated big game rifle, get the 270. If you don’t reload, get the 270 for ammo availability in more locations. Both are about as close to perfect as it gets for texas whitetail. The 270 does have more horsepower. If your not a woman or a little kid, the recoil of either should not bother you.

7mm-08 is perfect for Texas whitetail IMO.

And so is the 270, or 25-06, the 243, 22-250 or 223 in the right hands LOL.

My BIL that I've hunted with for 30 years, can not hit anything with his 270. Seen it several times in person, and just SMDH. For a stocky man, he is incredibly recoil sensitive. The 270 is too much for him. He uses nothing but a 223 to kill South Texas deer, every year. His wall is full of shoulder mounts and Euros, all taken with a 223 to the neck. He's only lost 1 deer in the 30 yrs that we have been hunting together. He took a running shot at a big buck chasing a doe, shot him in the leg and was impatient recovering.

I only tell this story to reiterate the same ooooold story.........that it's not the arrow, it's the Indian.

Both listed in the OP are fine choices. My first deer rifle was a 270 and every animal was a one shot kill.

Find the rifle that you like and see what it is available in. The .270 Win and the 7mm/08 are so close performance wise that it really doesn't matter.

I just picked up a Tikka 270 and so far, I’m loving the gun. Not sure there is that much difference if it’s strictly a hunting rifle.

I use a load I worked up for my .270 using 110 grain Hornady VMAX and Blue Dot for my granddaughter to use on her first hunt. Low recoil, no muzzle blast to speak of, accurate enough to put all the bullets in one ragged hole at 100 yards, and kills the deer and hogs around Mason with one well placed shot every single time. I now use the rifle and load when she's not here visiting! It's a delight to shoot. Hand loaders can do wonders with either the .270 or the 7/08. Load 'em light and they'll still shoot tight.

Yup, I usually use H5895 of AA5744 for reduced loads but have seen some good ones with blue dot.

If memory serves me 36 grains of H-4895 under a 110 grain sierra prohunter makes 2570 FPS out of my 270 win. Very light recoil and has been very effective on deer and hogs.

I could care less about whether a cartridge is long action or short action. There is enough 7mm-08 ammo out there that availability shouldn’t be a deciding factor. At the distances I shoot, 350 yards or less, I don’t believe there is any difference between the two.

I have a .270 and I’ve had it since 1973. It has served me well so that would be my choice. If I were just starting out I’m pretty sure I’d get a 7mm-08. I do know that if I ever get an AR-10 type rifle it will be in 7mm-08.

7mm-08, Less recoil, easy to build reloads for and accurate, quick handling... got one to teach my kids to shoot and now it's the one I reach for.... took 4 mule deer this year, pigs and white tails the years before...

Yes, that's a good load! I sorta cheat when I want to work up a "soft" load by using the Hodgdon 60% formula. Take the maximum powder load for the bullet you want to load for, multiply that by 60%, and that will give me a starting point. My experience has been that at the 60% level, I rarely get the accuracy I'm looking for, so I work my way up, a little bit at time, until I find the sweet spot. It doesn't always work but at least it's a guide. Gas guns are, of course, a little bit pickier about the cycling the soft loads, but if you experiment a little, you'll be able to discover the loads that work for your particular gun/bullet/powder combination.

Adjustable gas block can help there.

And experimenting with different buffer weights and springs will sometimes help if you don't happen to have an adjustable block installed.

No, I'm not. I developing soft loads so that my grand kids and great grand kids can start out using one of my existing rifles and work their way up, as they get older and put on some body mass, to where they can handle full bore loads with "grand pa's" guns. I've got this, Hudbone.
