I seen two yotes blow over the hill when I pulled up to the pond and initially thought there was one in the water. I guess she took to the water trying to escape the yotes. From the tracks she went into the water from the other side and swam to that side, about 60 to 70 yards. I came back by a little over an hour later and she was still there so I went to the house and got some rope. Walked around the pond and when I was about 30 yards away she jumps up like nothing ever happen and took off. It was about 24 to 25 degree's when I first saw her. Not to sure what was going to happen if I actually got a rope on her but the ducks were waiting around to catch the show.

As you said she probably went in there to escape the Yotes. I bet the cold water had effected her thought process and she would have probably died in there from hypothermia if you would not have approached her which stimulated her instincts to evade predators.

I have seen them wade out and feed on vegetation growing in and under the water surface. Not sure what this one was doing...

Deer are very resilient creatures. I have photographed deer swimming between islands in Kerr Reservoir during duck season in Oklahoma. Temps in the 20's to 30's. I'll have to see if I can dig one up to post.
