finally got an atv and beginning to buy implements for food plotting. My question is, how much and what should I plant on 100 acres. about half is wooded in Pine, oaks, etc. Quite a few hunters in my area and just feeding corn isn't bringing much in.

plant as much as you can----anyway you can plant two 2 acre plots? plant wheat, oats and winter peas (and don't forget to fertilize)

yeah, that would be no problem. would you recommend soybeans? i've heard they attract like nothing else.

I plant oats and winter peas........and fertilize is so important. 100lbs oats, 50lbs peas, 100lbs fertilizer per acre. If you don't bow hunt, plant 1st of October.
Takes 7-9 days to come up after rain. Be good on opening of gun season.

It has been said many time on here and I bring up again- getting a soil sample tested can save you money in the long run. Most east Texas soil is acidic and will need lime to raise pH so that:
a. You don't spend more than you have to on fertilizer to try to compensate for the low soil pH.
b. Your foodplot will grow better with the proper soil pH.
Iron and Clay cowpeas work well in east Texas in the spring because they better tolerate low pH, crappy soil that is prevalent in east Texas. A forage oats in the fall works well and if we get some cold weather with a few frosts, turnips can really draw the deer.

I planted Iron and Clay Peas in May and they did very well and the deer hammered them until my neighbors cows found a hole in the fence and demolished them. Be sure to inoculate the peas and it would be best to throw in some sunflowers and/or milo as the peas will attach the sunflowers acting a trellis

Iron Clay Peas are 22% protein too!!

Oh, in my opinion, a food plot will bring in as many deer as a corn feeder. So having both just doubles the odds.
Many a day I watch deer feed in the plot that never go to the feeder.

As mentioned above, plant as much as you can. Along the side of property roads in LONG strips (if possible) helps too. I am in Deep East Texas (35 yrs. now) and Oats and Peas do well to attract deer. The idea is to make YOUR place more attractive than your neighbors.

CORN is fine to bring in Does and hold them, but you won't shoot a 'good' buck over corn in DET. However, having 'does' around....insures you will have Bucks (for at least part of the season) so do all you can to make the property attractive to them. Bedding areas (undisturbed), watering spots (undisturbed), food sources not over-hunted.

I am fortunate to live on the property I hunt....so I can feed and tend to it 'year round'....which makes a difference also.
