It sounds like you’ve done about all a reasonable dog owner could ask for honestly so I’d follow our deputies advice and never bring it up again.

What would some of y’all do if diplomacy doesn’t work Neighbor's dogs were coming over the fence killing all sorts of stuff, many times. They were also chasing livestock, and I was afraid I'd find a dead calf... given the willingness for the dogs to kill wildlife. They killed 3 fawns, an armadillo, and bit a calf before momma got after them. 2 pit bulls. I followed them directly to his house after catching them. Had a talk with him, and explained the situation, and was just giving him a heads up that dogs that chase livestock and kill things on other people's land might not come home in ranch country. He got mad at me. Beyond that, a few months later, I had my dogs at the end of the drive checking mail. My dogs were on the side of the road, not in it... And that guy swerved his pickup, trying to run over one of my dogs. It's probably lucky for both of us he didn't. He's moved since then. Lesson learned: Do what you have to do, and keep it to yourself.LOL, you threatened his dogs. It isn't a wonder he didn't take a liking to you or your dogs.

Should have just shot them and never involved him. I was completely within my rights to do so. Would have worked out much better that way for all involved. A man that lets his dogs run around other's property, killing and injuring stuff shouldn't get too attached to them. What's frustrating is it's not the dog's fault. It's irresponsible owners.

I agree, he should of just smoked them first time he caught them chasing Livestock, and not gave a warning. Or maybe he should have of just waited until he had a $300 vet bill for having to stitch up a horse, that was run through a fence... Or worse. I waited like he did once. The out come was a lot worse for the dog owner in the end, hindsight I should of sent it first time I caught them

Stepped outside with my grandson, then in diapers, now grown. A neighbors dog was there and snarled at us. I got him inside and grabbed a gun. By then, the dog had left. I talked to the neighbor and told him bluntly to keep his dogs off my place.
A week later, the dogs were back. I grabbed a gun and shot the one that had threaten us. They are still pissed at me and I don’t give a damn.
A couple of years later I asked a sheriffs deputy about dogs running my cattle and horses. He told me that I first had to talk to the owner and then call the Sheriffs office about the problem but I had no right in Montague County to take things in my own hands.

I give that deputy an "F"... in knowing the law and the rights of people he should be helping. Texas Health and Safety Code Sec. 822.013 Dogs or Coyotes That Attack Animals (a) A dog or coyote that is attacking, is about to attack, or has recently attacked livestock, domestic animals, or fowls may be killed by: (1) any person witnessing the attack; or (2) the attacked animal’s owner or a person acting on behalf of the owner if the owner or person has knowledge of the attack. (b) A person who kills a dog or coyote as provided by this section is not liable for damages to the owner, keeper, or person in control of the dog or coyote.

Dad shot a doe in Northern Wisconsin that was being chased by a couple of dogs. He had to shoot one of the dogs when it acted aggressive. It was a large German Shepard or mix. It use to be a real problem up there. Dogs would not even eat the deer after taking them down.

If it continues you will have a choice to make and you know what it is. Dogs at the feeder and deer don't mix. And get in deep chute. It is illegal to kill someone’s dog.

To the OP
You've done what you were supposed to do. I to am a HUGE dog lover and guess what, my dogs DON'T leave my place.
Do what you need to do now
High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

That’s not true at all & you know it There’s numersous situations where it’s perfectly legal to shoot wild or stray dogs Keep your dogs on your own property & there won’t be a problem The minute those dogs leave your property & act aggressive towards people, livestock or wildlife the ROE change I find it hilarious that some people think it’s illegal to shoot dogs under any circumstance

We have dog on our lease. We have 3000 acres in one section, 2300 in another couple miles apart. Have dongs on both. These dogs belong to a lady that has 30 acres next to us. She said she had 30 acres and was not going going to pen them up. I didn’t talk to her but lease Mgr did. I have them in camera running hogs, another guy has a pic of the running deer.
What surprised me was how much ground these dogs are covering, Couple of miles if not three from home.
Thanks, Billy

Years ago when I lived in Maine, if you were hunting and saw a 12 point buck and a dog you better shoot the dog or get a ticket if the game warden saw the event. Still sounds like a good plan to me.

If I knew the owner and nothing was killed, they'll get one alert, just a 'Hey, saw your dog on our place near our stock-please see if you can keep him at home'. There will be no further communication.

It is illegal to kill a dog (or even a cat) unless it is attacking livestock/people. Another defense is it was acting aggressive and you felt threatened. That may seem unrealistic in the case of stray cats but according to a friend who's wife works for the pound, it's at least as common for feral cats to attack as it is for feral dogs. You might also let the neighbor know that you've taken up coyote trapping and that you wanted to be sure he knows so that he can keep his dog from getting trapped. Good luck.
