Just a reminder that Jan. is application time for Wyoming elk..
Tentative seasons and license quotas will be out soon but not finalized until April.

Apps for deer and antelope are not due til later in Spring and wait to apply until we see what winter does to some herds and the effect on license quotas.

The fun part these days is the results don't come out for non-residents until mid-May. So they get to hang onto your tag fee for almost 4 months. I'll hopefully be in Wyoming chasing antelope this year. going to wait another year or two to try elk up there again.

Yep, thank the outfitters association for that. WG&F would rather have apps and results after the quotas are set, outfitters want their hunters booked 1st before other states draw.
Elk numbers are good, should be some nice bulls taken and cows a plenty for meat hunters.

Hoping winter is easy on our deer and pronghorn, they need it. Pronghorn tags may be cut due to winter range conditions and lack of moisture all last summer in some areas.

Went on my first pronghorn hunt in Wyoming last year and had a blast.

Started buying points for mule deer and elk. Think I'm going to have to stack up elk points for a few years before I can draw a tag worth drawing. But I'm a newbie at this stuff.

Wondering if I can get a decent mule draw with one preexisting point or if I should wait on that one.

Ernest - There are quite a few areas you can draw in the regular and special draws for mule deer. If you hold out a couple years the options get deeper. A quick look on showed me 17 units (regular draw; 1 point) that you could possibly draw with 1 point that have 40% harvest success rates and decent access.

cabosandinh sounds great for you.

Lots of folks up this way are looking for hog hunts but they want cheap. Trades would be a good thought.

We do have some good mule deer hunting in 0-1 PP areas. You'll have to hike and work for them but very doable.
We hunt private in a 0-1 PP area.

If you want to get into bulls, start building preference points and learning about WY elk units. That's not to say you can't pull a bull tag with zero preference points, but some of the best areas require years of preference points (you can buy one a year).

Now if you want to warm up to that by hunting a cow (which is what I'm doing being new to elk), then those tags are pretty easy to draw without points and you can save up your points. You could also try for a cow tag in an area where you may want to hunt a bull in the future, and then use your cow hunting trip(s) as scouting for your eventual bull trip. Good luck!

Colorado has OTC elk tags, Wyoming is all draw for NR but cow tags, reduce price , are random draw and no PP needed. 3 PPs needed for general elk tag in Wyoming.
