This was the first time to shoot hogs with the 940nm module in my IR illuminator.

Takeaway... Not quite as bright of course, but you sure cannot see much glow from the 940 compared to the 850.

Besides that, it eliminates lots of the whiteout from brush I was getting with the 850. In fact, the sow I shoot in the video was brushed up under a big huisache tree, and she was behind tall grass and weeds as well. I could see her clear enough for a one shot kill.

I believe I like the 940nm! rifle

Big sow. .308 165gr soft point at 130 yards.

Any of you guys hunt with a 940nm illuminator?

That looks pretty darn good to me. Is that a Wraith?

So why do you think it doesn't reflect off of brush, but is still blinding with gun smoke?

Yessir, the 4-32 Wraith.

Maybe just simply because the 940 isn't as bright, so it won't reflect brush and fences as bad.

As far as the gunsmoke, it was very still, humid, no wind at all. Gunsmoke just hung there.

I've had a crapshoot with the gunsmoke thing. In either type IR. I think it's more of a matter of wind speed, direction.

I had ordered a 940 from a vendor on Amazon and they sent me an 850 pill. Told them what happened and that I had ordered a 940. They sent a replacement led pill and it was still 850. I still want to try 940 but I know the camera sensor isn’t as sensitive to the longer wavelength so you need to run a higher output lamp if you want to maintain the same visual distance.

Still might try again.

How do you like the Wraith?

Getting a bit better at being quicker with it.

Still not great at videoing with it though... grin

Impressive image if you ask me. Wish I knew if it would hold up to 458 SOCOM recoil levels....but I suspect not.

GN, it was a little over 100 yards.

I've killed much better optics on a 458 SOCOM and that's the main reason I moved back to 6.8.

Nice video BbarVRanch.
Thanks for sharing.

As far as the gunsmoke goes, I wonder how much of that whiteout is gunsmoke and how much is flare caused by muzzle flash? The reason I bring that up...

Last spring when we really started hammering pigs out in the peanut fields I was still using digital night vision. Granted it was a Photon 6.5 which is not as good or advanced an optic as the Wraith (the stuff I see from the Wraith looks really good). That first night that me and a buddy got on a good sounder we stalked up and then started hammering. He was shooting a short AR-10 in 308 with thermal but no suppressor. Maybe it was the position of both of us or something, IDK. But every time he shot it would wipe that Photon out for a second or two, I would lose sight picture and have to reset. He was killing me. That was the night I decided I was getting a thermal even if I had to sell a kidney to a Chinese dude in a motel room.

My photon never really flared (from muzzle flash) with me shooting because I shoot suppressed. I did have a few minor issues with smoke sometimes on those really still, cool, nights. And I think the suppressor helped with that as well keeping some of those gasses trapped in the can.

Simple. Muzzle flash doesn't stay around for multiple seconds as does the whiteout as seen in the video. Your situation fits that very well.

However, it seems like you answered your own question with your description.

The problem with whiteout from gunsmoke is exacerbated the calmer that the air is. I have been completely blinded for upwards of 5 seconds, an eternity, on a dead calm night. Usually, a half second to a couple is about normal depending on the wind. On a windy night, you won't notice the smoke at all, relative to the actual muzzle flash, because it will be gone.

Those flash hiders that direct the gasses upwards where your light and optics are sure don't help either.

Yeah. He had a brake that was directing flash to the side, where I was standing. That big flash would fake the auto adjust in the Photon and it would take a couple seconds to level back out. At which point he would shoot again, lol. Not to mention I am so used to shooting suppressed I didn't even think about him not having a can on. I didn't put ear pro on and it was like having my head inside a metal trash can while someone beat on it with a 2x4. We still killed 5 pigs out of that sounder though.
