Hunting in Burnet County this morning. About 9:00 we have a group of about 8-10 deer come running from a pasture to the south of us, jump a fence about 400 yards away and enter pasture i was hunting.

1 fawn didnt attempt to jump the fence (goat fencing) and kept running up and down the fence line looking for a way in.

After 5 mins or so it suddenly disappears. So i pick up the binoculars and spot it laying down kicking.

I tell my daughter its hung in the fence lets go.

We jump in the Can Am and get there as quickly as we can. Its about 10' off the fence barely kicking. A minute later its dead.

Called the game warden and he said biologists likely wouldnt be interested in testing it to leave it lay. He said animals suddenly die slmetimes just like humans.

Turned out to be a little button buck. Never expected to witness that.

Never seen it jump and wasnt anything near it for it to run into. Did not appear to have a broken leg or neck, and zero external injuries.

Never saw what they were running from, but thinking one of our hunters spooked them when leaving their blind.

Weird for sure, but what was the game warden to do at that point? Maybe it broke its neck or something trying to jump the fence when you lost sight of it. Who knows, doubt if I'm calling the game warden though as you didn't cause the deer's demise.

Its not uncommon for deer to die of stress.

Well figured 1 of 2 things would happen.

1. He would say let him lay.

2. We will have it tested to see if it was CWD, Covid, or whatever else.

We are curious on our end what happened and it was a 2 min call. Just strange to see a deer frolicking around 1 min and dead the next.

I have seen fawns run head first into those net type fences multiple times during a panic. Never seen one die though. My guess is it sustained a head or neck injury trying to punch its self through the fence.

That would be my guess but dont really know at all. I havent hunted that type fencing in many moons but would think it wouldnt be near as good as barbed wire for any deer to get through. Did you have access across the fence and actually look at it up close?

At some point in life its time to quit chasing the pot of gold and just enjoy the rainbow. FR

Deer spend the majority of their lives looking for a place to eat and a place to die. I had an old deer breeder tell me that when I first got in the deer biz. I found it to be true!

Always heard it about Suffolk sheep - ‘born looking for a place to die’.

My 2 labs jumped a fawn one time and ran it down. They didn't attack it but it died anyways presumably due to stress. Unfortunately, my wife and daughters got to witness it. Not fun.

Yes it was different pasture but still.our property.

No indications of injury at all.

Was watching it running and it just suddenly.fell, didnt appear to run into anything. Never did attempt.to jump.across.

Had this happen to me once. Had a fawn caught in a hog trap. I opened the door so she could get out, then walked to the back of the trap expecting her to run away from me which would have put her at the open door. Instead, she ran smack into the side and broke her neck. That really sucked.

Our old lease had net wire fencing with barbed wire on top everywhere as they ran goats, never seen so many deer caught in a fence in my life!

I would assume stress/ran into the fence and busted something.

I’m certain it was coved or the stress of 2020 itself, I’m betting we would all be shocked if we knew how many died odd deaths in the wild. They are some amazing critters but they have their own set of stresses we as humans will never comprehend. Even the more reason to respect them..

Hog traps that are totally enclosed kill or injure a lot of deer. I don’t allow them on our place. Open top only so a deer can jump out.

I had that problem with a hog trap. Young buck broke its neck. I removed the top of it.
