Guy put a guilt trip on me for no pics the last time I had the pointing dog out in the marsh pulling retriever duty.
Last night my son came in from college for Christmas break. Along with his uncle and cricket, we got out early this morning and went duck hunting. My wife had put in a request for some gumbo birds. The beauty of a good gumbo is it makes them all taste good, so we were leaning on what decoyed. We ended up with a five species mixed bag: 9 gadwall, two green wing teal, 1 wigeon, 2 blue bills, and 4 spoonies. We usually lay off the spoon bills but tell that to a 21 year old the day after finals week... There was a front blowing through at first light. As the temps dropped, the fog rolled in and it was slow. At about 8:30 the fog blew out and a steady NW wind kicked up. The birds started working our dekes and it didn’t take long to scratch 18 gumbo birds. After a slow start, it was quick paced and good to be hunting with my son again.
The pudelpointer was all in as we got off to a slow start, managing to scratch a few birds in the fog.
Then the front blew the fog out. Visibility picked up and Cricket is locked in on his momarsh.
Then Cricket got to go to work.
This one was good. It was a diving cripple. Cricket went under with it. When he came up he had it by the foot.
All in all a good day with 18 birds delivered to hand.
Nothing like hunting with family
