My buddy in Liberal Says It’s not worth the trip in his part of KS. I saved most of my vacation this year other than an Amistad trip, knowing I’d get the COVID. It wasn’t near as debilitating as I thought it would be. 10 days off work and only sick for three during Thanksgiving. I’m only working 4 days until the end of the year or I lose the vacation time. It’s worrisome because I’de never taken off a full week until ‘16 when we could find 25 coveys every day in north Tx. What kind of hunting have y’all had around Dodge City this year? I have some all day walk in spots that most don’t get to. Is it worth the drive? Have a buddy with two college boys that want to go with me that have never seen a Pheasant or any quail that just wanted to sit in front of a pointer and die. The Blues aren’t panning out in west Tx. We’ll probably make the trip regardless just so the boys can say they’ve been on a pheasant hunt.

If you have anything east of Dodge, might be a little better, especially quail. Was awful dry in that SW corner of the state at the wrong times.

I'm heading up 30 miles east of Dodge next weekend and can let you know, but my buddy who farms/ranches up there said he's seen more pheasant this year than he has since the drought.

We went opening weekend, 13 in our group. Not many birds to be found. We hunted west and southwest of Dodge on public land.

I didn’t get to make the trip. Two buddies wound up going but only had two good but 13+ old dogs and a pup. They got permission to hunt private land east of Dodge. They killed two roosters and found two coveys Friday afternoon when they got there. Saturday they zeroed and came home Sunday. The cover was very thick and I’d imagine they ran out of dog power quick after the first day. I still wish I could have gone. It probably would have been OK with 5 more men and 4 more dogs.
Taking vacation time hasn’t worked out well for me this year. Thanksgiving week I took off To hunt and found out I had Covid. This week I took off and I’m sitting in Dallas watching my old man on a ventilator. It’s not Covid but we’re still waiting for a diagnosis of his infection. Hope he heals up, I’m sure he wishes he was bird hunting in Kansas much worse than I do.

Thanks guys. I left the motel early this morning to meet with one of the doctors before a bone marrow extraction and my back window was knocked out. They stole everything out of my truck. The son of a bitch left his hat on my dash and stole all of my gimme hats. I hope to see a boy walking down the street wearing my jacket with one of my hats on in the next few days. Nothing I hate worse than a thief. The best hospitals in Texas are in a dark side of town.

I talked with my farmer (15 miles north of Cimarron) before season, not many birds, cutting milo, maybe 1 bird a day, he farms 4 thousand acres +, does have quail, which is odd for my thinking. overrun with coyotes.
hold on Newt, we got a runaway
