I started digging around in the safe and loading room collecting old reloads that I don't intend to shoot. I know I can pull the bullets and save the powder for reuse but can the live primers be (safely) removed and reused (reliably)?
This may have been covered in another thread but I couldn't find it.
Thanks.

I have eased out live primers, and used them elsewhere.

Eye protection, and go slow.

Thanks FJG.
I figured if I was going to try I would put a towel or something over the press when pushing the primers.

I have done it on a couple dozen or so and they all went bang after reuse in the new case. Years ago I would have just thrown them away .... my, how times have changed.

Interesting had heard of people removing live primers with no issues but didnt know/think they would be reloadable.

I've deprimed and reused several hundred primers. Never had a problem. Go slow and smooth, and wear eye protection just in case. I'll re-use case, bullet, and primer. Powder becomes lawn fertilizer.

I shot a match this weekend using primers I had 'reclaimed' from some old .223 rounds.

Only dropped 2 shots out of 60 outside 1 MOA at 500 yards, so I'd say it didn't have much affect on accuracy. (598-36x)

I did wear glasses, and I was careful not to let the decaping stem hit to hard.

I use a primal rights CPS to prime cases, and only single loaded them vs. sticking them in the tube. If you were priming by hand, I would probably only single load too. They're more sensitive with the anvil set.

Thanks for all the good info.
I never really thought about an increased danger when re-seating the previously used primers. I do prime by hand with a RCBS hand priming tool with the tray for holding multiple primers. I removed the primer arm from the press years ago and have no idea where that is. It would be a little tedious but I guess I could put one primer at time on the little pushrod that seats them using the hand priming tool.

I have pushed out and re-used them. Carefully and slowly. Never had an issue.

Pass the gravy.
