I found out Monday if my truck is going to be able to be fixed under warranty or not. In the mean time I’m kinda looking at a new one ton dually. I haven’t been following the new ones so I’m not sure what issues they are having. I’ve got a ram 3500 right now but I’m not saying I’m a dodge guy just what I’ve had the last few years. Just seeing what the good and bad is on the new ones

Hate to say it but ford. The 68rfe in the ram is junk, the aisin isnt tunable. Chevy is out bc IFS doesnt belong in a 1 ton anything. The 6.7 ford is a strong motor when deleted, but a PITA to work on.

I’m with ya in the IFS that’s what put a bad taste in my mouth on my last duramax. I just heard the typical hate speech on Ford just cause it’s Ford. I have this one deleted but if I buy a new one I’m leaving it alone. That’s why I’m in this predicament. I’m hoping they can get it fixed under warranty but I’ll find out Monday. I like my truck it’s been a good one and I’ve hauled a lot with it. I did the custom arp +650 headstuds and did the trans tuning so it’s stout. I’m just getting ready for the bad news and having a truck picked out if they can’t.

I’d say Dodge or Ford, if your leaving it stock I’d personally go with a Ram and the Aisin but deleting it I would lean towards a Ford. Fords biggest negative is having to remove the cab to work on them but otherwise their a solid truck. I don’t think you could really go wrong with either one.

On my searches on ram I have been looking for the aisin trans just seems that I’d have to go to the Laramie or higher to get it. I haven’t widened my search out of the dfw area yet but they’re all around $70k and I’m looking to stay under $60k. I’ll have to do some searching tomorrow outside of this area. The room of the Ford is what really has my attention. Looks like a dang mega cab in the back seat but no sacrificing 2’ of bed by having the extra room.

My 68rfe has been great even with the truck tuned with an additional 100hp, over sized tires, and always towing 75-80mph with the cruise control on.

If the OP doesn’t plan on tuning the truck, then the Aisin would be a great choice. I’ve got a few close friends running the 2018-2020 F-350’s and are having problems. They run them hard doing hot shot loads 5 days a week, but they are looking into Ram for a new truck to stay on the road vs in the shop.

Knock on wood I haven’t had any issues out the last two 68rfe trans I’ve had both deleted with trans tunes but this route I’m going to just leave it alone and deal with it. I’m hoping I don’t have to get a new truck I’ve put a lot of money in this with plans to keep it but if the repair bill lands in my lap and it’s north of $5000 I’ll just get a new one. I didn’t realize Ford was using the 10 speed trans on the new ones and I’m not sure how I feel bout it. Do the 10 speeds lock out when towing or anything I just feel like they would be shifting constantly when towing heavy. Unless the torque can handle it and able to stay in the higher gear guess depends on the gear ratios and all that. I don’t have any experience with the new ones so that’s why I ask.

Easy, on my ‘19 F 350 you can go into manual mode with the 6 speed tranny. I would think the same option would be available with the 10 speed.

I’d rather not have to do that everytime. I’m going to have to check on it and see if they have a lock out if what they do when towing. I haven’t shifted gear in a long time I forgot how lol

If you pull trailers much, you need to look into the laws. A dually has a 14k GVWR and when you hook up to a trailer that has more than 12k GVWR, you will need a CDL. That said, I see more hotshot guys running Dodges than Ford/Chevy

My friend that’s running the 2020 F350 for hot shots is routinely in the 20k range and says the trans is great. No lockout but he says it never needs it. He can also says the ability for the trans to downshift to slow the truck is worlds better than the 6 speed auto he previously had. Only problems he has had with the truck has been fuel pumps. He’s on his third since buying the truck new in March of 2020, about 45,000 miles.

I have owned a lot of trucks from the big three for my business. Currently have a 19 Ford and a 20 ram. Had GMC recently as well. It really boils down to personal preference. They all did the job for me. I trade when warranty runs out and if whatever brand I have doesn’t have significant changes to the interior or body style I get a different brand. Last thing I want is a new truck that looks the same. I had a really heavy load a few years ago and the F-450 was the only thing rated to tow it. I’m sure the Ram or Chevy could have done it but it was beyond their rating. I bought a semi and use it now but still have the pickups for lighter loads. I seriously have had no major issues out of any of them and would be open to buying any of them again. Just choose whichever you like the best they all are decent.

All my heavy loads are farm related so we don’t really get messed with since it’s not a commercial operation. Sounds like it’s going to be the old fashioned way and go test drive them.

Dad has an 18 ram and loves it.

If your looking at a 3500 in the ram they all come with the aisin so no need to worry about the other trans. Personally I would consider all of them. I know many do not like the IFS on the GM, but we have had them with no issues. I have always been a cummins fan, but i also would be hard pressed to go with another ram till they catch up on the transmissions again. Dad's aisin has been great, towed up to 15,000-16000 lbs with it so far and its smooth and plenty of power, but im not going to spend 50-80k on a truck and get a 6 speed when i could have a 10.

Dealership called and told me as long as they don’t have to get the manufacture involved they will do all the work under warranty so going to give it a shot and see if it can all be done without any assistance

Troopers are cracking down on the “Farm” tags especially when empty.

I stand corrected, he’s now at 70,000 miles and it’s going back to the shop for yet another fuel pump.

They are cracking down but when we have tractors and hay going down the road they don’t typically mess with us. We don’t go across state lines hardly ever and I usually go around all the metro mess so I stay on the FM and county roads or the smaller highways. Even when I did hot shots for a panel company I just made sure the lights worked and never attracted attention to me

Not particularly.

If you farm or ranch you can take the kids to the movies, go grocery shopping, or pretty much whatever you need to do.

If you don't have an Ag business, you'd be better off just getting regular registration.

It's people abusing the system that ruins things for what it was intended.

I have a good friend that owns a rather large trucking business. All his hotshot trucks are chevy, he drives a Ford for sales, and doesn't own a dodge. Fleet is over 100 power units. Don't know his reasoning behind any of because I haven't asked.

I enjoyed the hell out of my dually Silverado Duramax. I've had four HD Ram's since - 3 work trucks and one personal truck. They are fine for work trucks when I don't have to drive them. All of them have had some sort of front end issue.

And the Ram 3500 comes with both trannies. The Aisin is only available with HO Cummins.

Do some research on the cp4 issues with the new rams, coupled with trans issues in be out and I'm a dodge guy. There is a cp3 retrofit from S&S but it's about $2800
