If someone was to place anything new that's of significant size in your home, you would recognize it immediately as something that wasn't there before. I'm in no way trying to discourage you but only draw attention to how familiar deer become with their surroundings. If you can recognize that something has been added to an area, you can rest assured a wary buck will too.

Over time he'll likely accept it if it doesn't appear too much like something he has recognized before as a threat. But until then, your best shot is an ambush before he catches glimpse of it.

Consider too that in the old days, I hunter need only hide in a downed tree or some other natural cover to conceal themselves very effectively. And they didn't stand out near as much as what we pay a lot of money for today.

Just my $.02.

Good luck.

cheers You talken old school Texas Dan...
First lease i was on, every one had their deer stands, feeders, food plots...
My stand was just climb a tree were found good sign, scrape rub, food (natural) source, lotscof droppings..
Tie a string heavey enough ta support me rifle...
As got a little cash, chain on stands, & climbing stands...
Many a times sat out in the open, rain, wind & cold.. For just that reason..

As posted @ work they called me caveman, mostly for me old school hog hunts @ night
Flash light off, (it can be seen @ great distance) & pistal slinger on hip...
& eventually built a box stand, food plots & feeders..

One of the things i enjoyed about public hunting vs lease went back ta old school...
Climbing stands, were for comfurt..

Here, a climbing stand useless, so we use ladder stands, put up before season so they get used to it..
This stand been their several years, deer are used to it.
The one i had thread about, new stand, was put up late, their had been stand their year ago,. Day after put up, a fresh scrape was within bow range...

up Keeping it as natural as possible, not changing things works best...
Best wish's sir...

edit : biggest thing i've noticed since being back... L9ts if in-lines & can see deer stands like on leases...
High-tech... they are nice & cosey compared ta sitting in tree stands...

You post a photo of deer that close and then "someone" tells you why it won't work. Stick to your guns, hatchet or whatever you plan on using.

I like to say I got pretty good picking hiding spots when I first started turkey hunting as a kid. Because you never know where you might hear an old gobbler answer your call, you always have to be ready to find a spot on the ground to hide from his approach. It's a situation that also offers a comparison in how deer always seem to stop and look at your ground blind or box stand as if it had neon lights. Sit on the ground against a big oak that's been there for 100 years and you might be surprised at how close deer will pass by you. It also points at how we've let the camo makers tell us their latest pattern is the one that will surely make a difference in our success.

Hudbone cheers thanks for the vote of confidence...
Texas Dan cheers texas please hunting was completely new ta me...
Big differance in way hunt up here... Like the chain on & climbing stands, can see from distance & slowly move towards action... First box stand built @ house,in sections. Found area with good sign, & put box up in tree, like a play house...
Public land used my chain on & climbing stand, See what deer are doing...Always looked for good sign ta start with..
My hog only hunts (Jan-end March) after deer season.. were two fold scouting for next archery deer season kept a pen & pocket size note pad fit inta fanny pac, yes fanny pac, a long with my gps & camera a write down were seen action, &
hog hunts food for the grill& freezer...

Here, also have several areas picked out for ground blinds, built one out of pvc pipe, & also like you posted,up against tree, natural blind, it gets cold & sitting in 2ft snow can get cold on d feet...
Like said, i enjoy old school hunting over executive hunting...
Have a pic of the set up on this forum in different section...
Deer walk past it often...

edit : PVC ground blind tis thread in the Blinds & Feeder section page 2, if ya interested...
