Looking forward to it. Ended first split last Saturday with 9 out of myself and son. But all the other hunts 1st split have been just so/so. Looks like weather will be right this weekend going forward. Hopefully it stays cold and freezes hard up North!

Just so you know and you bust your bubble.

The 14 day forecast for North Dakota still doesn't show anything cold enough to lock.

This weather will help with the ducks that are here...but I wouldn't expect some mass exodus of birds from up north anytime soon. The photo period migrating ducks will be trickling in from the last full moon until the next full moon in December. A front or two may help shuffle them down this way. But, lock ups and snow up North is what it will take to move the mallards and that doesn't look like it is happening anytime soon.

Also, 1st split was good for us. Just didn't hunt as much around N TX, but we have a good amount of birds on the stuff we hunt. made 4 hunts in N Tx and 4 hunts in Louisiana...averaging 14 birds per hunt all together. Shot quite a few mallards the first couple hunts here in TX and then they got wise and spread out/quit paying attention to calling. Also, very few teal where we've been hunting. Mostly mallards, pintail, and wigeon.

Wrestling around in the mud won't help your duck numbers. Lows in the 30s and highs in the 40s and 50s in Dakota's aint moving nothing.

Hmm. I was looking at temperature numbers on the S. Platte in Nebraska last night and it was 14 degrees. But looking at Pierre it was a low of 28 this morning and a high of 49. That isn't forecasted to get cold enough to freeze until mid month. Even then there's precious little snow in the forecast. Those temps at mid month won't freeze up the rivers and without snow covering food crops them birds will stay where they are.

We will get some on north winds though. I've seen some migrators moving back in that had moved north a couple weeks ago. Not the numbers i saw then but still something. I vote we make Kansas the new North Texas. There not that well defended anyway. It would be easy. We could fight it out in Oklahoma and kill two birds with one stone...so to speak. smile

Nothing special....We've made 4 hunts and Mallards are #1 closely followed by Wigeon. Just happened on some small groups of Mallards that were not pressured and allowed for some good hunts.

I don't have high hopes for the rest of the season. The birds are here but they've gotten wise to the hunters and we really need a new crop pushed down, but if the weather isn't cooperating up north there's little hope.

10-4 bud. Well keep killing em man. The mallards have been hard to come by for alot of us. Any straps of big ducks is good, but I think we all chase that green dream!

This is why we have started hunting in OK.
I have a friend just above Wichita Falls that has had a spectacular early season on ducks.

Cold isnt a prob for waterfowl if they have food. Severe cold, yea.

I expect the same as the first split, limits of wood ducks and a teal/mallard/gaddie from time to time.

Went to my usual lake at the usual time which usually makes me the first one there. Not today! When I was pulling up one boat was pulling out. Area was full. I decided to drive an hour and hunt/scout a lake I've never hunted. I slowly motored out to an area that I could see most of the skyline. Not a lot of birds or shots heard. Had a few singles and doubles decoy but I couldn't get a commitment. Educated birds as well. I think I'm done until I get back from harassing Arizona deer in early January. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and the traffic will lighten a little. I plan on hitting north Texas and Oklahoma hard in Jan.

Looking at all the outfitters I follow on social media the opener was slow. Piles of 12-15 ducks for groups of 4,5,6 hunters.

On the other head the guys hunting geese killed the geese and wigeon. Saw some huge piles coming out of the panhandle ans north central tx

Started off a little better.....I guess! lol.

Was it me or did the green wings show up in full force??? Had 3 groups on us Sunday morning with about 20 in each group. Shot 7 teal, just my wife and I. We didn't see any big ducks which kinda shocked me. Ran into some guys that were hunting a pond not far from us at the gas station when we got done. They only shot 10 teal with 4 guys. Im not going to complain shooting teal, but man Im ready for a good push of big ducks down!
