Couldn't figure out where to put this so if this is wrong maybe an admin can move it. I need suggestions on an electric heater for my travel trailer. The old 1971 Avion heater has long since died and I've moved to space heaters without much luck. It was 25 the other morning outside and 45 inside with 2 space heaters running, the little ceramic kind. Not unbearable but the Mrs. will not enjoy that when she comes out. Anyone have a brand/size electric heater that would be better?

Thanks for the info in advance.

Greg

We had a 30-foot tongue pull TT. We used a single plug in heater like the ones from walmart/dollar general etc. and it kept it plenty warm in there. Once got the bright idea to add a second and we were sweating. Also far more economical than running the propane furnace.

The oil filled radiator type worked well in my old 30ft. No worries about starting a fire when tyour not in the trailer either

One of the 2.5 foot tall oil filled ones that look kind of like a radiator that has a thermostat. They don't get hot enough to start a fire and usually max out at 15 amps but have a couple of lower settings. I find that two of those is more than enough but have to turn one off to use the microwave.

Wife and I use the Honeywell 360-degree heater from Wal-Mart in our TT, and are never disappointed.

We use these as well. You can set up a small fan next to it to circulate the air and it will stay nice and toasty inside,

You could run a buddy heater for just a few minutes also, just to warm it up a little

Most of these 120v heaters are 1500watt, some may move air differently but it's still 1500watts. You either need more insulation or a different heat source.

We have a couple of different ones in the trailer. The radiator ones that everyone has been recommending work the best for long term heating and keeping things warm. We also have a couple of the smaller rotating ceramic ones with fans that help heat things up in smaller areas. We got them at either Walmart or Home Depot and they are all $50-$60. Don't wait until the last minute or you will be walking down an empty heater aisle and looking at the $200 guys. As StephenB said, these guys all run between 10 and 15 Amps when they are on their high settings. So if you get more than one, find two independent circuits or you'll be popping breakers.

Thanks,
Rich

Every type of electric heater with the same wattage rating will produce the same amount of heat. Yes, some are cooler on the surface, but the total warmth added to the space is the same. The only way to get more heat is to have a higher wattage rating.

You will find that around 1500 watts is typically the largest for 120v because that is 13 to 15 amps on the power cord and breaker.
Any 1500 watt heater will produce the same 5,100 BTU per hour.

Marc

yep, we have a 1500w Lasko oscillating tower that works well for the rear portion (living/kitchen/dining) of our TT and then use a smaller one that is directed into the bedroom. Running both will warm up the space fairly quickly and then we turn the thermostats down to maintain temperature. This is in a 28' Sportsmen with large slide out.

Our trailer isn't that big - only a 20 footer. We run one small space heater and also turn the fan on to help circulate the heat. Doesn't hurt that we have feather beds and down comforters though.

This plus. Once you find your comfort setting. Just turn on an off. My experience is not instant heat but real steady control once you learn how you want temp.

I run one of these in a 32' TT, and it keeps it plenty warm. Two of them running will run you out of the trailer.

Hard to beat those when you have electricity.

I think they work better than the bigger infrared box types

Same one I used in my 30' TT before I sold it. I am uber cautious, so would set mine on a tray sitting on the stove in the kitchen. Once the camper was warm, I usually ran on the 1300 watt setting with the thermostat on the lower end as well. If on high and high, it was like an oven in the camper. I bought that heater at least ten year ago and now keep it in the bathroom for cold mornings.

Have one oil heater and the longer it is on the better job it does. Have another with fan forced heat that has a temp control.

update on the northern tool 20 dollar heater. it works fine for a 20 dollar heater and is better than what i have...but...the fan on this thing is loud but not unbearable. i think it's a little better than the oil fill heater i have in the garage due to the fan dispersing the heat better, you almost had to sit on the oil fill heater because the heat goes straight up without a fan... 2cents
