I hunt mostly at night, but love calling hogs during the day. A way to change things up.

I will shoot hogs anytime I see them. That said, after 7 years on our lease the hogs mostly come out at night now. The first couple of years I killed plenty of hogs during the day, but now daytime hogs are rare. I started with a Sightmark Photo and eventually switched to FLIR PTS 233. I’ve also added cellular game cameras and wait for the hogs to show up. Once they show up I drive to the feeders and shoot them. I will also hunt the wheat fields once the rancher plants them.

I’ve taken to night hunting hogs and coyotes ever since I bought a thermal. I work nights so it’s easier for me to stay out all night, I dearly HATE getting up early to go hunt.

I hunt hogs day and night, but my kills are probably 90% at night with thermal. Obviously available food sources is a factor, when food is scarce in Feb, Mar, July, Aug and Sept I kill a higher % in the daytime. Right now with all the acorns on the ground in NE TX hunting is tough overall. BUT sometimes things click, I killed 10 last night, 2 at feeders and 8 out in cattle pastures rooting.

Using thermal, I killed three last evening by calling. I was back in my truck and headed home by 7 with 3 hogs cut up, placed in plastic bags and on ice. I love quick nights like that.

I go out around sundown and get into the blind and stay until about 10:00 - then a 1:15 drive back to the house and work the next day. On my other property (which I have successfully ridded of hogs for 1 2/3 years now (I know they'll be back) I would go 2 -3 nights a week and often stay out until 1:00 a.m., but I have a container house out there and would just spend the night and come into the City to work in the mornings. But that is what it took to kill and run the hogs off.

I used to hunt during the day, but would only get a shot in maybe 1 out of 10 times hunting. Pulled the trigger on thermals last year. Completely changed my hog hunting game. Pretty much all of the hogs I shoot now are at night. The sounders are pretty smart on my property. Anytime myself or a guest gets a shot at one during daylight hours... they stop coming until it's dark. After a few months, I'll see them start coming during the evening again. The lone boars rarely coming during daylight. There is also a crazy coincidence that's been happening for the past year. Like clockwork... anytime I'm halfway through cooking or about to put food on the table... the hogs show up on my cellular game cams. Almost like they have a sixth sense on when it's the most inconvenient time for me to drive over and pop them

Concentrating on deer right now so we just say hey hogs in a normal voice. They leave. When deer season ends we will go back to targeting them. The grandsons use bows so they can shoot them anytime. But life gets in their way so it will mostly be up to me.
Actually when deer season ends they pretty well worry more about their girl friends. When they do show up I wind up with some goofy 20 or so year old females around.
Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.

I use two Moultrie Hawg lights under my feeder. It’s a green light. Using two will light up my entire feeder pen. We use the Leupold fire dot scopes which is a red dot. It shows up great using the green lights.
