I had my first encounter with a Texas Game Warden Friday evening. It was my first time ever and I started hunting dove with my uncle in the 60`s when I was 10 or 11 years old. They stopped while I was at my truck locking the ranch gate on a caliche road in Erath county. They were very pleasant and professional. They shined their flashlight at my tailgate, but that was about the extent of their investigation. We shot the $hi+ for about 5 minutes, asked about who owned the land and if I leased it and then I asked if they wanted to see my license. After telling me to sign the back of my license they said have a good night and drove off. While I was walking back to the truck I remembered how law enforcement have been tread by some in this country lately, so I stopped, turned around and told them I appreciate what you do and they said thank you. Very pleasant encounter.

I love seeing our Game Wardens checking and meeting folks and doing potential enforcement. Great story thanks for sharing.

Most game wardens are great guys. Not had a bad encounter with one, ever.

Some I like well enough to call "friend".

Nice story. I killed my first deer when I was six. I'm 71, so 65 years ago. Only had two encounters with GW. One in Jack county
while deer hunting 35 years ago. Very nice man. One that I still laugh about while on lake Brownwood fishing a bass tournament.
At that time the bass boat that I owned had rails on it. The GW wanted me to lift the lid on the live well to see what we had. He
couldn't see well enough so he stepped into my boat from his. Only he lost his balance and fell backward out of my boat into the water.
However, and this would never happen in a million times. His gun went under the railing and he was hung up dangling in the water.
He sort of screamed for help, and the only way to free him was to pull his gun out of his hoster and he then fell completely into the water.
He climbed into his boat and drove off. Five minutes later he came back and I was about 100 yards farther down the bank. He forgot his gun.

I've had for more pleasant experiences with Texas game wardens than I've had with those in other states, most notably those in Mississippi. Many would likely call my last experience with a Mississippi game warden as being unbelievable.

roflmao That is crazy.....I've never had a bad experience with Game wardens. In fact we were on first name basis with Janie and Zach until they got moved to another county, I guess.

Haven't ever met a bad one yet. Usually get checked by them 2-3 times a year at dove lease. Never checked on the water or at deer lease. Every one I have met has been awfully nice. Just doing their job.

I have always been a supporter of all law enforcement especially game wardens because they are so under staffed
BUT!! Some people have no business being in law enforcement
Had 1 try to get us kicked off a lease so he could get his buddies on it
I will never lease again
I don’t even hunt anymore I take my grandchildren I want them to experience what I did when I was a kid
We own all our hunting property now

I've had positive experiences in both Texas and Wyoming. Like dealing with any other LEO, attitude goes a long way.

I've only had 3 encounters that I can recall. Two of them were on the lake and were just doing safety equipment checks on the boat and one was when I got finished hunting one evening.

I was way out in the country in Freestone county and had the lightbar on the front of my truck turned on. I turned it on shortly after I nearly plowed over a sounder of pigs and was going to turn it off closer to town. Yes, i know it's illegal to drive with it on, but I was no where close to any civilization and was trying to prevent another seat-sucking moment. Come over the top of a hill and he was sitting on the side of the road. He lit me up, so I just pulled up next to him. Super nice guy and asked my about the light bar. I told him what happened and he got out and shined his flashlight in the bed of the truck and asked how hunting had gone that year. We shot the bull for 4-5 minutes and he told me to be careful and be on my way. He also told me to shut the light off before I got close to town. Pleasant experience.

Talked to one this August in NM, he checked our antelope camp, complemented me on my tagging (horn tag was on the head, carcass tag was in a ziploc in the cooler with the meat). Very pleasant guy, he rolled up right as one of the other hunters came in. I hurriedly told the guy to tag his PH as he hadn't yet. He said our camp was good, the one down the road a ways had several violations and he didn't give them a pass as the guide is a known arsehole. He took the time to show one of our guys how to do the online tagless check-in of his animal with the NMFG app.

All my encounters with Texas GWs have been positive. Just recently they were out at our place investigating a poaching incident and we've seen them come back out to check in on the place.

The vast majority of encounters I’ve had with wardens in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Wyoming, and Colorado were very pleasant. Just hard-working folks doing a tough job. Only had a couple of what I would consider bad experiences, and all those were dealing with wardens that had a reputation of being a jack@ss. Never ticketed, as we were legal in all cases.

I have been checked many times, mostly fishing but a few times hunting.

The only one i didnt like was the one that had a key to the lock on our ranch gate. Everything checked out legit we politely expressed we didnt like him having said key and he hasnt been back in several years.

Most encounters with GWs will be pleasant unless you are doing something wrong.

Had one pull into our camp few weeks ago shortly after dark blacked out. Not a light on the truck was on. He came sliding in to a stop. I couldn't help but laugh. He checked our license and asked what we had shot at earlier, which I answered truthfully, 2 raccoons on one of our feeders. He laughed and said he loves a good coon hunt. We shook hands and he was on his way. He came in like he thought he was going to catch us which was funny. Really good guy. I think his name was Ryan Johnson in Mason/Llano counties.

I was once ticketed for hunting w/o a public lands tag over 10 years ago, so I was issued a ticket. No big deal and I was guilty. That's my only negative encounter, but I have definitely found that the less talking you do, the better. I have personally encountered, and observed with others, that there is absolutely no upside to giving out any additional information even if you are not guilty of anything.

On my last lease, the GW seemed to come through the ranch to our camp almost weekly. That seemed a bit much to me. He gave out tickets to guys for things like not signing a turkey tag (even though everything else was filled/cut out and attached), MLD book log out of order, and someone driving over 30 on a county road that had no speed limit posted anywhere. On all of those instances, he always started off friendly and made it seem like he was there no real reason, but would ultimately issue citations resulting in hefty fines.

Federal Game wardens have a much deserved terrible reputation. Normally state wardens won't give the time of day to a fed.
