This Thanksgiving was everything Thanksgiving should be in East Texas. Family gathering, great food, and time spent in the woods. I started my 8 year old son off with a pellet gun a couple years ago and figured he was good enough to deer hunt this year with the perfect starter gun. The tried and true Remington 700 model .243. Two doe and two heart shots = one proud dad!

We capped off a great weekend with a public land hunt in the national forest. It's been a weird year in the forest for me. I saw several 3 year old 8's early October, but no shooters on the limited oaks we found dropping. The acorn crop was really weak and our usual haunts didn't have many deer in them. I guess they were hitting the private land feeders hard.

I didn't have much time to hunt early November, and when I did it was hot/dry. Finally the weather pattern changed along with my strategy, focusing on heavy cover thickets with browse. Yesterday evening Slade and I closed the deal on this old bruiser walking in full strut. What a blessing to do it with my son way back in the forest!

What a great weekend for you both!
Congrats

That is a big old bruiser!!

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Beautiful family. I really like the 'the buck stops here' and hunting camp. That's a great deer too.

This one looks like a Norman Rockwell painting.
