I recently decided to get a new toy (Tikka CTR). I am just getting it set up, haven’t even shot it yet, but was wondering if I should go ahead and order a muzzle break. I have never had one, so am not really familiar with the pros/cons.

Thanks

No reason not to.

Without it, it is too loud to shoot without hearing protection, anyway. With it, you lose 30% or more, recoil. Reducing recoil let's you watch your shot fly, and land where you were shooting. That allows you to learn from every shot, easier.

Thanks. Any recommendations for the CTR?

As stated you need hearing protection either way. With a brake you can shoot far not rounds than without one and still enjoy it. It’s nice to be able to see your hits and it’s also nice to put a hundred rounds down range and still be having fun. I’m not all that recoil sensitive but I have become very spoiled to the brake.

As to which one, I recommend a self timing brake. I like the offerings from Area 419 but I’m sure there are many out there that can do the job. The Area 419 does not use crush washers or require any special tools to install. It’s also bulky in comparison though.

If you’re looking to cutdown the recoil go for it. I would shoot it first and see how you handle the rifle without it.

Live Oak Accuracy, Wylie, TX

I helped test and refine the prototypes. It is an end user timed brake, and it works well.

Only picture I have of mine on this device, it’s a little chubby, check my signature line. Was designed by a police sniper from Illinois. He has some good videos on YouTube about it. Also makes a big chubby that is larger. The gun is a 20” CTR and yes, I hit the white buffalo 3 times.

I followed the advice of Fireman and now have two Live Oaks. Very pleased with them. Highly recommend em! I also like supporting a Texas made product and a TX business.

I was hung up on muzzle brakes years back. Not so much now days. My Weatherby ultralite 300 Wby Mag jumps around pretty good without a brake. Much easier to shoot with a brake. I took the same rifle to Africa with a brake and PH I hunted with didn't like brakes. I shot an Impala with it, he asked if I didn't mind shooting my 375 H&H the rest of the hunt, it didnt have a brake.

At times its hard even with good ear protection at the range to shoot when the guy beside you is shooting a big magnum with a brake.

Pretty sure I am down to one rifle with a brake, got rid off all the rest.

None of my big bores have brakes, 416 Rigby, 375 H&H, 458 Lott etc. Both the Lott and the Rigby with full boat loads will thump ya pretty good !!!

My guess some of the modern brakes are quiter than what I've used. I haven't have a brake put on a gun 20-25 years.

Thanks, Billy

Thanks guys. Looks like I need to ask for a stocking stuffer smile .

Maybe a silly question, but do you order the exact size/caliber? Or is it like a suppressor where you can order like a 30 cal and use it on multiple calibers? I don’t think I will move it around anyways, but just checking....

Get a live oak accuracy. Yes, you order it by diameter. You can get a slightly bigger diameter than you need if you're using it on multiple caliber guns, but it won't reduce recoil quite as much if you use it on a smaller caliber than it's designed for.

I have a Beast muzzle brake. It's way too loud. Live Oak is the perfect mix of noise level and recoil reduction, in my opinion.

Lastly, to answer your original question, absolutely you should get one if you're planning to do much target shooting.

I shoot a ,284 with a .308 brake. Recoil is minimal but it is also a 4 port and the loudest brake I’ve ever used.

If the gun is a bench toy i might, if it is a hunting rifle I wouldn't.

I have a 280 AI that I hunt with without a brake. Recoil isn't a problem but I do lose my target when I shoot due to barrel rising. I ordered a clamp on brake from Witt to help out. Gonna see if it makes it better.

I say nay but I hate the noise even with hearing protection.

I have only had 2 guns with brakes. A 300 win mag which kicked too much to shoot 100 rounds a day without killing me. Also a 260 Remington, did this just so i could see impact shots ay long distances. Both of them had Little bastard brakes on them.

I have probably one of the most minimal single port brakes on my 308 and even it makes a noticeable difference. Haven't tried many, however a huge annoyance for me is the maintenance. They get really dirty, you can't seems to really clean the barrel crown with it on or maybe i should quit being a little girl about it and commit to removing it every time to clean the crown properly. I still haven't really figured this out yet.
I'd rather have one than not but I kinda dislike it too.

I clean my rifle whenever it gets fouled enough to start shooting bad - usually every 200-300 rounds. When I do a full cleaning at that point, I pull the brake and clean the crown. Otherwise, I just leave it and roll.

I've never been able to clean the inside of my brakes very good, but it's never seemed to have an impact to performance of the brake or the rifle, so I choose not to worry about things that don't matter.

MPro7 carbon remover.

Let the brake soak in it for 30 minutes. Also apply plenty of it to the crown and let that soak. I use a piece of hardwood, with a good edge on it to scrape away the carbon off the crown. You can get inside the ports of many brakes with a small file. Have a shop towel handy to clean the carbon off the file periodically.
