My son and I have been trying for years to get his first buck. This year we are at a new lease. This morning we sat at a friend's stand (with his permission) and as we were sitting there around 9am I look in 1 feeder area and nothing. So I turned towards the next and nothing was there either. When I turned back to look at the other again something didn't looked right. So I pick up my bino's and glassed the pen. There stand behind a feeder leg and facing straight at us was a deer. It looked like it was trying to hind behind the feeder leg. Lol. It had a thick body so I figure it was a good chance that it was a buck. It final raised its head for a second and there they were , his horns. I quickly told my son to grab his gun "we have I buck at the feed". He sat there ready to shot as soon as he had a good shot. That was when he raised up and looked our way. Then the questions started coming from him and me is he big enough/legal in our A.R. County. After further glassing we decided that he was to close to be for sure and that he got another year to live. Plus he looked young to us. He even walked within 20 yards of us. My son first buck. So close yet so far away. Lol ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/ubb/download/Number/17104/filename/20201129_091314.jpg)

Definitely NOT wide enough and a young deer to boot. Good call.

Good call bc that deer is prob about 11 inches wide. Patience will pay off and the right one will walk out.
I did build a cabin. Aka the brokeback shack.

I think it was a great lesson in conservation for the kiddo. It will be twice as sweet when you finally close the deal.

After seeing spikes and does for several years, we finally had a buck show up and was too close to call so we passed. My son has 3 nice bucks in the last 2 years. Being patient and just enjoying time together in the woods pays off big.
See y'all around the campfire. Never underestimate a meth head!

Yep, we had a great time. Last week we had a big boy come to our feeder with a doe that easily would have been big enough for his first buck. But he was broken off on 1 side (Right side only had about 2 inches left) from fighting and my son didn't want his first buck to be all broken up, because I told my boys that I would pay to have there first buck mounted. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/ubb/download/Number/17133/filename/20201121_070605.jpg)

He deserves to live a few more years. Good call. ^^^^^^^^^^THIS^^^^^^^^^^ I'm all about youngsters getting a deer, especially their first buck but if you could find a nasty old 2 year old for him to harvest as his first it makes it that much better.
High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

He will get one eventually, but you can bet it will be legal and mature. I raised him to manage wildlife and not just shoot because he can. I have no doubt that when he pulls trigger on his first. It will be a good deer.
