So I live outside of town a good ways and have a water well that supplies my house with really good water. But It's an electric pump and I'm thinking if things every went bad enough that the electricity was out for days, how could I still pump water? Yes, I could get a generator and have it wired up, but then if gas becomes scarce, what then? Does any one have a manual, wind, or other type of system on their water well to maintain a water supply when you lose electricity?

How deep is the well? Is a hand pump available that can pull water that high?

How far away are you from another faucet?

Maybe consider propane.

I keep a backup water supply in our travel trailer. Prior to that, I didn’t have a workable plan.

These days I have a big generator that’s on propane.

Solar with battery back up for the well pump with a storage tank as a reserve.

propane generator with a 250 gal. tank of propane.

most dependable and 250 will last a long time with the benefit of also having power to the house.
you could also put in a storage tank but my experience with those is the water will get funky if not a lot of use.

A good question you asked, but I am with Hop.

Only thing I would different, maybe, is have two 100 gallon tanks. I like the duality of of regulators et ctra. I belive one of anything is a step away from none.

For a cheap, off grid sites sell a dipping tube with a flapper valve in the bottom. You drop in well connected to rope. The flapper opens, 4 ft section of pipe sinks, then you hoist up about a gallon of water.

Depends how deep the well and your budget.

Any kind of wind or solar probaly is will need a maintenance program.

If the 2nd amendment was written just to include guns for hunting, why is there not an amendment to protect fishing poles?

Solar for sure. I have seen at least 50 systems and they all work well ( grin) I am not a fan of wind for this purpose.

You should ask Western on here, he’s had a lot of experience this past week. He thought burning his well head would be a good idea

Solar or windmill is the best backup, a generator being 3’rd. After Harvey we had no city water for 12-14 days and then only available for so many hours a day. No electricity for 3 weeks. We ran generators not just to power travel trailers and temp lighting, but also to power our water wells. The shortage of gasoline to run the generators was definitely a problem. If it wasn’t for some damn good people here on the THF donating and delivering much needed goods and gasoline, my family and I would have really been in a bind.

If it's a deep well I would look at storage tanks.

Solar with a raised cistern is what you seek.

One of my friends put 750 gallon tank up on a 16' platform. The solar panels power the well pump any time there is sun...no cutoff switch. There is a trickle of water even on a cloudy day. On a sunny day, it makes about 2 gpm.
The solar pump fills the overhead tank. The overflow pipe on the cistern runs into the water trough for his horses and when that overflows, it feeds the small pond behind is house.

He has a conventional pressure tank and a booster pump that is fed from the tank. This operates off a pressure switch, like a conventional pump would...but then comes the cool part: There is a check valve connected between the bottom of the cistern and the output of the pressure tank. IF the power is out long enough for the pressure tank to run out, then the cistern gravity feeds his house. Your are not going to take a shower or run the dishwasher, but its plenty of pressure for the toilets to fill and to use the sinks and bathtub.

His well pump is about 120'. The pump is pretty light and he can pull it my hand with no problem. He bought a spare pump when he put this in about 5 years ago, but the original pump is still running strong.

We all need to practice Whoa more.

My well, when drilled, produced 1/10 gpm. I expect it has improved somewhat since then. But, I pump into, I believe, a 2,500 gallon tank that sits next to the well house. Bigger ones are available. It is uphill, about 100 yards, from the house. Water line from well to house is buried. Even in an electrical outage, I can still get water.

Rural commercial plumbing supply houses carry the tanks.

Nice! Just getting into prepping?

I think I would start with a holding tank that you convert to a rain catch.

For generator, treated diesel last much longer than treated gas.

Prepping rabbit hole runs deep!

I’m sure someone on the forum sells a solar pump that would probably fit the bill. Believe he posts in classifieds.

Storage tank with an on demand pump powered by a generator. Nothing says you have to run the generator 24/7. Couple hundred gallon tank will go a long way in an emergency. Same with a generator if you use gas wisely.

At our hunting land, we have a well about 300 feet deep. Planned ahead and have a submersible pump down at about 280 feet and a manual hand pump at about 260 feet...just in case. It was a really task getting them in there...patience, and bloody knuckles. Takes a while to get the water up from that depth, but in an emergency situation, it would be priceless and the effort would be worth it.
