Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

Have you used anything other then 16? I have 7.5", 10.5", 11.3", 14.5", 16" and 18" in small frame ARs. I prefer the shorter barrels for hunting, typically with a suppressor.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

Yea I really like the Weight reduction in my 10.5in. I was just wondering if the ballistics falls off to much for hunting.

What one is your favorite? In 223 I like my 10.5" for hogs and deer. Haven't chronographed it but it shoots 62 grains fast enough to kill efficiently.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

I'd go 16 or 18.
Look at ballistics by the inch and you can get a good idea of velocity loss.
The secret to a long life is to try not to shorten it.

The 10.5” is pretty handy. I have one in 6.8 and think it’s about right for a hog, deer, and yote gun.

223s are VERY veocity dependent for wounding potential. Because of that if I decide I'm going to shoot something with a 223 I go with a 20 inch barrel.

You can also shoot an elephant straight up their a-hole with a 38 special and it will eventually kill them but that doesn't mean it is a humane or smart things to do. I've killed Hogs with a 22lr to the forehead but I prefer to shoot them with something much larger so I don't have to look for their bodies.

Shot placement is important and so is using a cartridge with enough power and a bullet designed for the task at hand that can do enough damage to kill an animal quickly. I like to shoot animals with a bullet suited to my intended target with a cartridge that provides enough velocity for a bullet to do its thing. I want to inflict enough damage to an animal to drop it on the spot and before it has a chance to recover its feet and try to run away it would have already bled out.
