Well it is better to build one on a long action and you will find brass is expensive.

I have one and really like it. I like to target shoot some but hunt more, the rifle I have in it is a Cooper 52. One of the easiest rifles I have owned to work up sub MOA loads for because every thing I have shot from it have been sub MOA. My most accurate loads are with Berger 140s at 2700 or 2900 fps both shoot around the 1/3MOA with me shooting and that ain't bad IMO since I doubt I can do better day in and day out. Hunting it flat works good IMO. Down side it is more costly for brass, barrel life around 1000 rounds and needs a long action with the chamber cut so the bullet can be seated long to shine. Overall though I am happy with it. These days it does not see much use though as where I hunt now 100 yards is a long shot for me but is would work great there as well, just some shorter range rifles I have are better suited for tight places .

I have a hunting rifle on a short Remington action, wish it was a long but it shoots very well.
Use Lapua brass, 140 Nosler Partition.
As kmon 1 says, you got about 1000 rounds before accuracy drops off, don’t go hunting jackrabbits.
Shot a hog with it day before deer opened.

What barrel manufacture would you recommend?

I have 3 of them 2 krieger and 1 brux barrels the krieger are 1:8 and shoot slightly smaller groups than the brux which is 1:8.5 super flat shooting and will penetrate any game animal length wise with a heavy bullet. Lapua brass is the way to go. Excellent choice for fun, and hunting.. long action definitely needed.
H4831, H1000 will give you longer life especially if you don’t run it hard and keep it 2900 or below. It’s no worse than anything else honestly the harder you run it the quicker it give up accuracy.

If you reload it’s a great round if not then I would suggest the 6.5 PRC which is similar ballistically.
Of course if you are building off a standard bolt face then the PRC won’t work.
My 6.5 /284 is built off a Tikka and made for hunting. Have a PRC barrel for my Switch barrel and it has a slight speed advantage but it’s not much.

I've got an Alamo Precision Rifles 6.5 PRC that I'd sell if you decide to go that route. Have factory Hornady eld-x ammo and Dallas Reloads 139 Lapua Scenar ammo also.

No point unless you reload

Creedmoor mirrors it's in factory offerings, on top of that in a short action, 6.5 PRC beats it in a short action

My creedmoor slings Chad’s 143eldx at 2910 in a 24” benchmark barrel

If you go 6.5x284, make sure it's long action. You can plan for about 2950 fps with a 24" on a long action. If short action, you are looking about 2800 to 2850 fps, depending on a few factors. The 6.5 PRC is very similar in performance and loading, but on a short action.

Like BOBO said, I have 6.5 CM loads that run easy 2850 fps with a 140 grain, and sometimes faster. So, depending on what you are wanting to do with it, there's several cartridge choices.

Weatherby’s new 6.5 RPM works on none-mag bolt face.

I don’t want to get into trouble on here talking about buying or selling a gun on this form. If you are interested in selling in I guess the best thing to do is post it on the buy sell and trade page and let me know. We can talk about it over there.
But I would like to keep getting info about the 6.5x284
I almost got a 6.5cm but was told it maybe a little under powered. Any thoughts on that.

What are you hunting?
put a long high sectional density bullet from a 6.5 in the right place and it will kill some big critters. How many moose have been killed in Europe with the 6.5X55 and Bell used the smaller 6.5X54MS on wuite a few elephant.

Then pick something with more barrel life. The only way to get good at it is practice.

If you're not a handloader and you want to stay with 6.5mm, the 6.5 Creedmoor was built for your exact situation. The 6.5-284 is a handloaders cartridge. The few online offerings may or mat not shoot well in your rifle, and they're pricey.
