Missouri deer season started last Saturday. Sunday I shot a medium size doe that ran about 30 yards and fell over. When I approached the doe I could not see an exit wound. After I turned her over to look at the entrance the attached picture is what I found.
She was about 40 yards from me broadside facing to the left (so I am positive this is the entrance). This is from a 30-30 reloaded by Chad with 150gr flat nose. The only bone I see struck is the ribs. WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED????
Any ideas?

Where in MO are you? I am from NW Missouri ( St Joe area) and but haven't hunted up there for the past few years due to CWD.

Crazy! I can't say for sure what the heck happened but it is highly unusual that's for sure.

I don't see a picture, but maybe your bullet hit a twig, branch, etc. before hitting the deer. My son shot a doe and the entrance wound was about 2 inches long. It looked like a knife stab. We looked around and found a thin twig that the bullet had hit about 15 yds before hitting the deer.

I think this is the most likely answer.

Need pics. Sounds like a splash wound though. It’s most common with thin jacket bullets with high impact velocities. I doubt the 30-30 meets either criteria though.

Obviously, you shot a rare albino doe and she has her eyes closed. When clouds are low, they’re very difficult to target. Good job!

Chads reloads have done a great job for me- small entrance with 1- 1 1/2” exits. Most shots DRT, rarely ran more than 20 yards if not. This one ran about 25 yards before falling over.
This was an entrance that shocked me when I turned her over. Rethought my shot and her angle but same conclusion- that is the entrance. And NO EXIT.

Very odd! Could she have turned right as you pulled the trigger? Did you search for/find fragments in the wound? Were the fragments spread evenly or in one localized area of the wound?

Is it just the shadow or is there a scar there on her front shoulder? Maybe you got some zipper action between the bullet and her 25 yard dash on a previous weak spot

Dang - that is one nasty wound, especially for an entrance. Could she have been quartering and head down. Maybe bullet ran along shoulder and collected flesh along the way.

Hit the point of the shoulder and the bullet blew up on hard bone right under the skin.

Out of curiosity do you know what bullet it was? When my son was a ninth grader he shot a buck a little over 200 yards with his 7-08 and a 140 GK. He was trying to put it in the crease right behind the point of the shoulder. He tucked it in a little to close and clipped the point. Nothing like your picture but it had a large entrance as well.

It looks like you hit bone and got an explosion. Here's a slight quarter shot that blew out the brisket, My boy made 115 yard shot behind the shoulder and out the brisket with a 30.06 150 grain corelokt.
